CUSTODIAN 2 – FACILITIES &

00678J – Range 32, step F: $36,288/annual, $3,024/month - $17.38/hour PLUS SHIFT DIFFERENTIAL PAY of $174 per month

Reports to: Custodian Supervisor

Position Summary:

Perform various housekeeping, custodial and maintenance related tasks to ensure and maintain proper cleanliness of facilities. Repair and replace various items.

Essential Functions:

  • Cleaning restrooms, classrooms, offices, break rooms, dining areas, meeting rooms, hallways and entrances.
  • Sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, emptying ashtrays, trash receptacles, washing windows, restocking paper supplies cleaning chalk trays, blackboards and white boards.
  • Stripping and waxing of floors and small to large scale carpet extraction.
  • Repairs or replaces doors, hardware, windows, locks, gutters, benches, tables, desks, chairs, cabinets, etc.
  • Repairs and maintains electric powered janitorial tools and electric or gas-powered lawn equipment such as vacuum cleaners, floor polishers, floor scrubbers and carpet extractors.
  • Repairs or replaces fixtures, furnishings and any other miscellaneous objects.
  • Paints small offices, restrooms, kitchens and classrooms.
  • Makes rounds, locking doors, closing windows, turning off lights and replacing burned out light bulbs; turns equipment on and off.
  • Moves furniture and equipment; arranges tables and chairs for special events; collects and disposes of garbage and trash; shovels snow and sweeps and washes sidewalks on an emergency basis; does occasional yard and garden chores such as mowing, weeding or raking leaves and debris.
  • Improves work methods, knowledge of equipment, supplies and safety through participation in training sessions with supervisors.
  • Uses cleaning supplies and agents in a safe and efficient manner.
  • May unclog drains and correct minor maintenance issues, or report-said issues to supervisor for correction on the day shift.
  • Ensures that buildings and areas, which are not in use, are properly secured. Report unauthorized occupants and unusual incidents to the supervisor; report unsafe conditions.
  • Attends various meetings, training’s and equipment/product demonstrations as well as other professional developmental events such as safety training.
  • May maintain inventories and makes simple reports; requisitions supplies and equipment.
  • May operate motorized equipment.
  • May supervise lower level staff.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Physical ability to do required work.
  • One-year full time equivalent experience in custodial duties including general building and custodial equipment maintenance.
  • Ability to read, write and understand English.
  • Experience working in a school setting, motel/hotel industry, healthcare or basic cleaning services.
  • Proper knowledge of cleaning chemicals and techniques as well as ability to read and understand basic Material Safety Data Sheet information.

Preferred Qualifications:
Custodial experience with large institution custodial standards and requirements.

  • Self-discipline and self-motivation.
  • Ability to work with college staff in a pleasant and productive manner.
  • Possess a basic understanding of computer skills, particularly word processing and e-mail.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated competency and experience working in a diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological, gender and racial/ethnic backgrounds and those with physical, emotional and/or learning disabilities.
  • Experience creating digital content (such as Word/PDF documents and web and learning management system content as appropriate to the role) in accessible formats.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.

Additional Information

Terms of Employment:

The current vacancy is a full-time, overtime and benefit eligible position expected to begin as soon as possible. Work hours for this position are generally 3 p.m. to midnight., Monday through Friday. The salary is $3,024 a month ($17.38 per hour) plus shift differential pay of $174 per month. Hours and days may change depending on the needs of the college. The list established by this recruitment will be active for a minimum of three months and be used to fill other custodian 2 positions as needed.

  • Proof of completed COVID-19 Vaccination is required upon hiring and employment at WVC.
  • A valid, unrestricted Washington state driver's license (or the ability to obtain if coming from another state).

Bargaining Unit:

This position has been designated as a bargaining unit position represented by the Washington Public Employees Association.

Physical Work Environment:

This position may have contact with college staff, students and the general public. Most work is performed inside buildings, but some movement between buildings is expected. It is essential to have the physical ability to stand and walk on a consistent basis; lift, push, pull up to 50 lbs.; climb ladders, bend, squat, reach; twist hands, wrists, shoulders, waist, and hips and perform repetitive movements. Must have good hand dexterity, including grasping, holding and related movements. Must have good vision, which includes depth perception and field of vision. Must be able to follow and receive direction and instructions and receive supervision. Must have good cognitive skills that include: short- and long-term memory, attention to detail, abstract reasoning and decision making. In addition, the person must have the physical ability to deal with environmental stresses, emergency situations, deadlines, working alone and a variety of other duties. Must be able to work with the following conditions: wet floors, dust, fumes, odors, working outside, working inside, handling chemicals and cleaning agents.

Furthermore, the person must have the ability to wear safety equipment which includes: chemical protection goggles, safety glasses, face shields, dust masks, ear plugs, ear muffs, hard hats, back support belt/brace, waist support, elbow support, knee pads, gloves, protective clothing, rain gear and protective footwear.
