The veterinarian assistant fills a vital role in the veterinarian office by supporting DVMs and LVTs in daily tasks by cleaning and maintaining equipment, feeding, exercising, grooming and transferring patients, preparing and sanitizing surgery suites, restraining and handling patients, and clerical and administrative work.
Description
Essential Functions
1. Provide compassionate care to animals and demonstrate concern for their welfare and well-being.
2. Anticipate the needs of the doctor and ensure efficiency of surgery and appointment flow.
3. Prep animals for surgery, monitoring of anesthesia, assist with surgical procedures as needed.
4. Monitor patients after surgical procedures to ensure that they are recuperating well; report negative changes observed to veterinarian.
5. Assume primary responsibility for assisting in veterinary examinations and rechecks.
6. Prepare equipment and supplies for veterinary examinations.
7. Ensure that clinic is clean and tidy before, between, and following exams and surgeries. Prepare surgical packs; maintain sterile fields.
8. Compassionately and effectively restrain animals during veterinary exams and procedures.
9. Assist with or administer treatments as needed and/or directed, such as injections, applying bandages and dressings, euthanasia procedures.
10. Assist with or perform routine procedures such as nail trims, ear cleaning, basic grooming, microchipping, vaccination and suture removal.
11. Collect blood and urine samples; perform in-house diagnostic testing under veterinarian’s supervision, record findings; maintain clinic area, supplies and equipment.
12. Administer medications to animals under veterinarian’s supervision.
13. Fill prescriptions and ensure appropriate handling of prescription medication.
14. Clean and ensure sanitization of kennels.
15. Assist with clerical tasks as needed, including maintaining files and forms, entering data, receiving shipments of supplies ordered, and putting items away properly.
16. Discharge all patients in house and outpatient, review treatment recommendations and follow up care with owner. Ensure that all owners receive proper medications/prescriptions/medical supplies.
17. Assists with maintaining organized inventory of prescription medications, shampoos, flea and tick products and other veterinary supplies for clinic use. Ensure proper handling and storage of donated veterinary medical supplies. Monitor inventory for expired supplies.
18. Supports the relationship between the Wenatchee Valley Humane Society and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and staff; maintains confidentiality of work related issues; performs other duties as required or assigned.
19. Other duties as assigned.
Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
1. Minimum 18 years of age
2. High school diploma or equivalent
3. Proficiency with computer software such as MS Word, MS Excel
4. Experience with general office equipment
5. Knowledge of:
- Sterile procedures
- Blood borne pathogens
- Animal husbandry practices
- Customer service practices
- Basic math skills
6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public
7. Ability to work with a culturally diverse staff and community
8. Experience handling animals safely and humanely
9. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions
10. Strong communication, organization and technical skills
11. Ability to work under pressure and stay calm in stressful situations
Preferences
1. Experience working in a veterinary hospital and/or animal shelter experience.
2. Experience with shelter database software (such as PetPoint) and other office equipment.
Other Requirements
1. Washington State Department of Health Veterinary Medication Clerk credentials (or obtain within 6 months of employment).
2. Have or be able to obtain a valid Washington State Driver’s License
3. Must pass a drug screening
Working Conditions
While performing the functions of this job, the Veterinary Assistant is regularly required to talk and hear; frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds without assistance and up to 100 pounds with assistance. Ability to safely handle all types of animals. Must be physically fit to restrain animals. Noise level in the work environment is often loud. May be exposed to unpleasant odors. May be exposed to bites, scratches and contagious diseases.
