Job Description
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Candidate must be at least 18 years of age;
- Shall have a high school diploma, or equivalent.
- Able to read, write, understand and communicate in English at a minimum of an 8th grade proficiency.
- Possesses clear verbal and written communication skills.
- Possess sufficient computer skills to be able to print documents and enter information into resident records.
- Positive and energetic attitude.
- Professional in appearance and conduct.
- Must be criminally cleared by DOJ and FBI via the Live-Scan process prior to employment.
- Be in good health and physically and mentally capable of performing assigned tasks. Good physical health shall be verified by a health screening performed by a physician not more than (6) months prior to or (7) days following employment. Must test free from pulmonary tuberculosis at time of health screening and annually thereafter.
- Have current Adult First Aid card at time of employment and maintain throughout length of employment.
- Must have dependable transportation and be able to work varying hours as needed.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Assists residents with activities of daily living (ADL) as listed on the residents Service Plan. These activities may include: bathing, dressing, skin care, perineal care, mouth/denture care, hair care/shampoo fingernail/food care, shaving, personal hygiene, incontinence care, making beds and other daily tasks, as needed.
- Assist in meal service: serving, cleanup, responding to resident requests, food prep as needed under the direction of the cook..
- Assist with instrumental activities of daily living (ADL) for residents as listed on the residents Service Plan. These activities may include: reading to them, writing letters for them, taking them to the on-site beauty shop, escorts to dining room or activities, providing companionship and other tasks as needed.
- Assists residents with the self-administration of medications as listed in the Service Plan and under the direction of their supervisor.
- Provides assistance with the elimination needs of residents by: providing care for the incontinent resident, including the proper use of incontinent briefs; reinforcing bowel and bladder training; assisting residents with toileting, including the use of urinals, commodes and toilet seat extensions.
- Provides resident activity programming, including exercise, reminiscing, music, memory sensory and individual activities.
- Provides safe transfers, positioning and turning of clients using effective body mechanics.
- Assures that residents are properly and comfortably clothed at all times.
- Orients new residents to the community and assists in completion of new resident paperwork. Assists in the completion of any on-going resident paperwork.
- Measures and records the resident’s vital signs, height and weight as necessary.
- Reports any needed repairs of community-owned property to the Administrator
- Reports any suspicion or evidence of elder abuse, mistreatment or neglect as outlined in Personnel Policies.
- Intervenes in situations involving unsafe or inadequate care and reports immediately to the Administrator.
- Promptly answers emergency call system, telephone and paging systems.
- Participates in all scheduled Caregiver team member meetings, and other community-wide Team Member meetings as requested.
- Participates in voluntary and mandatory on-going education and in-service training.
- Possesses sufficient computer familiarity to be able to print shift task sheet, enter resident notes by typing on the keyboard, and respond to and send internal email.
- Uses effective verbal and non-verbal communication to present information in a positive and non-threatening way.
- Responds effectively to resident behavior. Uses supportive communication in resident interactions including effective communication skills with residents who have sensory deficits.
- Observes and reports resident physical and emotional condition changes, using appropriate terminology and abbreviations.
- Applies non-sterile bandages/dressings and applies anti-embolism stockings (TED hose).
- Demonstrates good practice of infection control principles by understanding the infectious process and modes of disease transmission, and by using appropriate hand washing techniques.
- Cares for cognitively impaired residents by: using techniques for addressing the unique needs and behaviors of individuals with dementia; communicates effectively with cognitively impaired residents; communicates understanding of the behavior of cognitively impaired residents; responds appropriately to the behavior of cognitively impaired residents; uses interventions to reduce the effects of cognitive impairments.
- Demonstrates understanding and support of Resident Rights by: providing for resident privacy; maintaining resident confidentiality; promotes the residents right to make personal choices to accommodate their needs; reinforces behavior consistent with resident dignity; assists resident to participate in activities.
- Maintains a safe environment by: keeping the community safe, clean and comfortable; recognizing environmental safety hazards, understands the methods to prevent on-the-job accidents and injuries; identifying and following the community’s disaster plans; can describe and follow the community’s fire procedure, including the operation of fire extinguishers and ways to prevent fires; planning for the safe use and maintenance of equipment; practicing good infection control procedures.
- Applies principles of basic nutrition to resident care by: identifying therapeutic diets; recognizing personal, cultural and religious variations in diet; understanding the dietary problems of aging; provides and restricts fluids as ordered; prepares and positions the resident for meals; assists the resident with eating using effective feeding techniques; observes and records the amount/percentage consumed.
- Supports the mental health and social service needs of residents by: observing and reporting mental status and behavior changes; modifies own behavior in response to resident behavior; facilitates the resident’s expression of needs and provides supportive communication; assists and instructs residents to be independent in the activities of daily living; uses resident’s family as a source of resident support.
- Provides care for residents and family when death is imminent by: considering the spiritual and cultural beliefs of the resident and family; observes, records and reports cessation of vital signs in accordance with advance directives (as governed by RCFE licensing and regulations);
- Performs and completes assignments within established procedures and guidelines.
- Performs other tasks as assigned by the Administrator.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
In a typical (8) hour shift, Caregiver will routinely be required to stoop, carry, bend, squat, kneel, crouch, climb, grip, reach, push and pull. Caregiver will also occasionally be required to lift overhead, waist high and floor level. The maximum lift will be over (50) pounds. Caregiver will also be required to use fine motor and manual dexterity skills in writing, keyboarding and grasping.
