What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant District Attorney position at Western (Hampden) DA Office?
A prosecutor in the Juvenile Division will primarily handle cases against youth between ages 12 and 18, along with some adult criminal cases that have jurisdiction in the Juvenile Court;
Prosecutions in Juvenile court, not only prioritize victim and public safety concerns, but also emphasize the rehabilitation of youth with prevention and intervention as a goal;
Prosecutions in Juvenile Court include a range of all delinquency/criminal violations as complaints or youthful offender indictments for offenses from minor misdemeanors to major felonies, excluding murder
Along with prosecutions in court, there may be opportunities for outreach and collaboration with public schools, the community and social service agencies, both public and private.
Overall responsibility will be to prosecute all aspects of delinquency/criminal cases in the primary and jury sessions of the Juvenile Court in Hampden County, including the Springfield, Holyoke and Palmer sessions;
Daily Duties will include:
Review of police reports and charging decisions made by police agencies and make appropriate recommendations and changes as needed based on applicable statutes, case law, and victim information and input for case resolution;
Handle arraignments in court, make bail requests, motions for conditions of release or detention, such as dangerousness hearings and bail revocation hearings as appropriate;
Provide mandatory discovery to defendants and their counsel;
Handle all pretrial motions filed by defense counsel including requests for further discovery, evidentiary and non-evidentiary motions to suppress, dismiss, and prepare written memoranda and briefs;
Conference all cases and make recommendations for case resolution at mandatory case conference sessions with defense counsel;
Handle any mental health hearings which impact criminal cases;
Meet with victim and witnesses involved with cases and work with Victim Witness Advocates
Handle case resolution by way of District Attorney diversion, plea, trial, or dismissal where appropriate; Follow the mandates of the Victim's Bill of Rights;

Payroll ls paid bi-weekly and based on a 37.5 hour work week (normally 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.). All Job offers are contingent upon successful completion of a background check. Required: law school graduates (Juris Doctorate Degree) and applicants with SJC Rule 3:03 certification.
