Secondary Relationship(s): Head Cashiers, Closing Managers
Supervisee(s): None

Position Summary:The Service Assistant performs standard Cashier duties; in addition, they are responsible for monitoring the Self Checkout (SCO) lanes, greeting and assisting customers as needed, and performing basic troubleshooting to keep SCOs operational. This is a customer-facing position. This is not a supervisory position.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Proper handling of all customer purchase transactions, including the tender of cash, checks, credit and debit cards, gift cards.
  • Perform till countdowns as needed.
  • Perform light cleaning duties as directed.
  • Take and submit Customer Requests as needed.
  • Answer department phone calls and take messages.
  • Provide exceptional customer service.
  • Greet every customer.
  • Balance tills in the POS.
  • Assist customers with their SCO interactions.
  • Guide our customers through the SCO interface.
  • Demonstrate the correct self checkout procedure to our patrons.
  • Check IDs for purchases of alcoholic items.
  • Enter Not On File (NOF) items into the SCOs
  • Monitor SCO lane operation by observing:
  • Lane & transaction awareness lights.
  • Customers body language
  • Listening to voice prompts
  • Direct traffic through the SCO lanes.
  • Watches for building queues in the rest of the front end and attempts to move traffic to self-checkout by inviting customers to use the SCO lanes.
  • Provide exceptional customer service.
  • Train new department personnel.
  • Observe the customers to prevent shrinkage.
  • Adding money to the SCOs when needed.
  • Clear currency jams, load receipt paper and restart SCO systems.
  • Maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance for scheduled shifts.
Other Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Light Stocking of merchandise chips/snacks and beverage cooler.
  • Cleaning SCOs and front of store
  • Remove trash in Front End and Office.
  • Answering phones and paging the correct department

Special Considerations:
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Working conditions include a fast-paced retail environment that involves long intervals of standing, crouching and reaching while moving product.

While the above description encompasses the majority of the responsibilities required of the position, at any time the Management may request that an employee perform reasonable additional duties, which may be required for the safe and smooth operation of the store.
