GENERAL SUMMARY:
Provide customer service to consumer and commercial customers in a retail building and lumber supplier environment. Assist in obtaining objectives established for the store (i.e., sales, customer service, gross profit, accounts receivable, etc.).
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Maintains an atmosphere of enthusiastic customer awareness with primary emphasis on providing efficient, courteous, and friendly service to all building professionals and retail customers.
- Wait on customers, be able to write up regular and/or special orders.
- Place special orders in a timely fashion.
- Adhere to Company safety policies and rules.
GENERAL DUTIES:
- Wait on customers, be able to write up regular or special orders.
- Familiar with Stock and Special-Order items available thru Whites.
- Prepare sales tickets, including unit prices and extensions with totals.
- Direct customers to proper pick-up areas and notify yard staff of customers need.
- Computing and quoting estimates for customers that do not require blueprint takeoff.
- Hears and promptly and effectively resolves customer complaints.
- Write up Purchase Orders for special orders and review acknowledgment from vendor to ensure accuracy.
- Provide accurate advice to customers on proper materials, their usage, and installation techniques as needed.
- Brings customer service needs to Store Manager’s attention and assists in developing store services and levels.
- Seeks out and takes advantage of market and margin opportunities.
- Maintains strong knowledge of store products, policies and procedures, customer service resources and capabilities.
- Represents store and company professionally to customers.
- Maintains comprehensive knowledge of the construction industry.
- Be able to demonstrate the use of merchandise when requested.
- Do blue print take-offs and project estimates as required to meet store and company objectives.
- Read trade magazines to keep abreast of changes in the construction industry.
- Attend Store meetings.
- Attend Trade Shows as requested

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Participates in store and company customer relations and sales functions.
- As requested, contributes to store and company planning.
- Attend trade shows as requested.
- Maintains positive relations with suppliers and vendors
- Watch for Shoplifters and notify supervisor immediately.
- Assist customers in carrying large, bulky, or heavy items or customers with physical limitations that require assistance.
- Performs other related duties as required
SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING PREFERRED:
- Duties require knowledge of the construction and building supply channel industries, completion of two to four years of college and 2-4 years of progressively responsible related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of blue print reading and estimating.
- Well organized with the initiative necessary to achieve store goals.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; to establish positive public relations for the store and company; and to interact with a wide variety of people.
- Basic knowledge of people management, including inter-personal skills and constructive methods for providing feedback and motivation.
- Good working knowledge of personal computers in a networked environment including knowledge of accounting and estimating software applications.
- Process and maintains NYS Driver’s License.
