PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The Substance Abuse Counselor I, provides the following services (as defined by state of Georgia service guidelines) for individuals with Addictive Disease: Behavioral Assessment; Service Plan Development; Community Support Services; Individual, Group, Family Counseling/Training, Discharge Planning, Brief Treatment and Brief Intervention Techniques. This position may include working in a clinic, community or hospital setting. Community work may include working in shelters, homes, work sites, schools, etc..

A Bachelor's from an accredited college or university in Psychology, Education, Counseling, Rehabilitative counseling, or Social Work with a minimum of two years supervised counseling. Three to five years of experience in IOP/PHP is required.
Possess equivalent combination of education and experience, and the ability to communicate clearly and concisely in writing and orally. Has general knowledge of support agencies such as Alcoholics Anonymous, etc. Experience in a facility or community program performing substance abuse treatment and rehabilitation, social work, corrections casework, probation and parole casework, counseling, or a closely related field.
Must be a Certified Addiction Counselor: Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Certified Addiction Counselor, Level II (CACII), Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor II (CADC II), or Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CAADC). Must have and maintain a valid GA driver's license.

Provides drug counseling and support to individuals, families and groups in the community specially:
- Provides counseling to individuals regarding the use and effects of drugs.
- Provides counseling to pregnant women about the effects of drugs on the fetus, as requested
- Provides group counseling, as requested by the Drug Court Administration.
- Ensures legislation, standards and guidelines are being followed
- Maintain strict confidentiality guidelines regarding all participants, conversations and referrals
- Maintain appropriate documentation and case management/treatment records and plans.
- Provide status updates for accountability court and actively participate in staffing meetings. Performs other related work as required.
- Utilize evidence-based cognitive behavioral treatment such as CBI-SA, MRT, Thinking for A Change, etc.
- Thorough knowledge of NA and AA principles and step work.
- Utilize LSI-R, TCUDs, NEEDS and other approved assessment tools
Provides Treatment Referrals, as needed:
- assist individuals to identify their need for treatment programs
- liaison with treatment programs
- assist participants to meet all requirements
- access funding for treatment programs
- evaluate the effectiveness of treatment programs

- LMSW, LAPC
- 3 years-experience conducting groups and/or individual substance abuse and mental health counseling using evidence-based curriculum in a accountability court/corrections environment.PERFORMANCE APTITUDES

ADA COMPLIANCE
Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station.
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
