Wichita Collegiate School (WCS), a thriving Independent School located in Wichita, KS is hiring a Middle School Dean of Students for the 2025/26 school year. The dean of Students serves as an aspirational educator who cares deeply about the experience and development of adolescents. The dean promotes an inclusive culture focused on student well-being. The dean will exhibit and model character and respect while providing vision and guidance for student life.

The primary responsibilities:

  • Oversee the disciplinary process for minor and major infractions.
  • Assist with creating and managing student class schedules.
  • Monitoring daily attendance and following with consequences when necessary.
  • Partner with parents to support each student emotionally, behaviorally, and academically.
  • In coordination with the school counselor and head of middle school, lead the advisory program by assisting advisors in creating content relevant and aligned with the advisory program.
  • Closely work with teachers and coaches to support students, policies, and community values.
  • Overseeing the student dress code and all related expectations.
  • Monitor the lunch program and assist with record keeping and supervision.
  • Annually review, update, communicate, and enforce student handbook policies.
  • Work with student leaders to schedule and organize events and ensure proper student supervision during evening and weekend events.
  • Overseeing the House System in Middle School.
  • Facilitate middle school community meetings, select assemblies, and events throughout the year.
  • Serve as the point person for student activity groups, service opportunities, and clubs.
  • Stay current with research and current practices through ongoing professional development and networking.
  • Additional responsibilities that enhance the student experience as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Five years of education experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling, Educational Leadership, or a related field.
  • Ability to learn and manage complex school and student schedules.
  • Proficiency in utilizing technology in a school and classroom setting.

Preferred Qualifications/Experience:

  • School administration and leadership experience.
  • Experience working in independent private schools, including effective parent and community engagement strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to remain calm and confident under pressure, with a professional and approachable demeanor.
  • A positive attitude, sense of humor, and the ability to connect with others while maintaining appropriate boundaries.

The ideal dean deeply understands middle school student development, including their academic, social, and emotional needs. They demonstrate knowledge of best practices in student discipline, support services, and experiential education programming. This includes familiarity with creating and implementing effective student policies, managing attendance, and fostering a positive and inclusive school culture. Candidates should also possess a strong understanding of child development principles and be able to apply them to their work with students. A commitment to educational access and a belief in the potential of every student is essential.

Exceptional leadership, communication, and collaboration skills are crucial for this role. The Dean of Students must be able to effectively interact with a diverse range of stakeholders, including students, parents, faculty, staff, and community members. Strong executive functioning skills, including managing multiple priorities, maintaining confidentiality, and engaging in strategic planning and daily operational tasks, are necessary. The ideal candidate is a skilled communicator, adept at building relationships and fostering a sense of community. Experience working with middle school students and a genuine passion for supporting their growth and development is highly important in this role.

Work Environment

The Middle School Dean position is dynamic, and its demands vary depending on the time of year, student needs, and other support for faculty and staff. Attending student activities, performances, athletic events, and other parent/community events is expected to foster a positive and inclusive community environment.

June and July offer a flexible work schedule to prepare for the upcoming school year and invest in professional development. You will coordinate with the division head to identify the details and parameters of tasks and projects. This includes but is not limited to creating schedules, managing facility needs, assisting with curriculum, and organizing and preparing house sorting/activities.
