JOB TITLE: Health Room Assistant
Provides support in the care of students and in the maintenance of the efficient operation of the school health office. To accomplish this, the health room assistant works closely with the registered school nurse, staff, and administration of USD #259, and is responsible to the registered nurse, building principal, Director of Health Services, and administration.
By law, the health clerk functions under the school nurse's license. Therefore, the registered school nurse and Director of Health Services will be the primary person in determining the most qualified candidate. Human Resources, the building principal and the Director of Health Services will provide assistance and guidance during the interview process.
Qualifications:
- Must have high school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Demonstrates communication skills.
- Current First Aid and CPR/AED certification within 60 days of employment.
- Must have patience and ability to work with students and other staff.
- Possess proficient computer skills including but not limited to Outlook, Word, Excel and ability to use office equipment as required.
- Desire to continue career improvement.
- Essential Functions:
- Support the philosophy and mission of USD #259.
- Practice health services that conform to district policies and protocols.
- Assist the school nurse in smooth and efficient operation of the health room.
- Follow delegation from RN in compliance with the Kansas Nurse Practice Act.
- Communicate effectively and positively with all members of the school district and community.
- Communicate assessment needs as indicated, to RN.
- Responds in a positive manner to change.
- Must have a strong ability to multitask and to prioritize tasks in order of importance during the school day.
- Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:
- Requires prolonged sitting or standing.
- Requires stooping, bending, reaching, and lifting students.
- Must work in noisy, crowded and stressful environments.
- Must be able to respond to an emergency in a rational, calm and efficient manner.
- Must possess the physical strength to occasionally assist in lifting the students, bending and performing CPR.
- General Responsibilities:
- Help maintain the health room under the direction of the registered nurse.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Follow Board policy and Health Department guidelines on exclusions and readmissions.
- Practice universal precautions and all other health and safety policies, included in the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
- Enforce all district, school, and classroom safety rules and regulations.
- Provide basic first aid to students seeking health care. Contact parents according the health protocols (Emergency Care Flip Chart) and guidance of RN.
- Assist with compliance of the immunization laws by auditing charts, notifying guardians for updates needed, and sending the immunization data to the appropriate place.
- Assist with health screenings and assessments.
- File or record screening results, new immunization data, and any pertinent or new information regarding individual students. Communicate new findings to the school nurse.
- Attend district and individual training as provided by Health Services Department school nurse and other district in-service activities, as requested.
- Assist students with personal hygiene, toileting and or diapering as needed.
- Send letters, notes or other written communication to parents with school nurse's knowledge of the communication.
- Communicate in a timely and efficient manner with the registered nurse according to protocol, especially in regards to need for follow-up and student referrals.
- Assist with medication administration in compliance with medication delegation policies.
- Assists with coordinating schedules for health education programs and communicate with all pertinent participants.
- Respond calmly to emergencies and initiate CPR and 911 calls when appropriate.
- Document daily contacts in the electronic health record as instructed by school nurse.
- Able to work independently with a clear understanding of delegation and need for RN supervision and interventions.
- Assists with health record maintenance, scanning and filing.
- Compiles inventory and ordering information and assists with the process to complete these tasks.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or school nurse, which are consistent with Board policy and the Department of Health Services protocols.
