The Classification Counselor assesses and evaluates the personal and criminal history of adult inmates to recommend a security level and in developing and monitoring appropriate work and educational programs. Persons in this role possess the ability to conduct effective interviews with arrested and incarcerated individuals to obtain demographic information in order to determine potential risk and immediate needs of inmates. Duties include but are not limited to:
- recommend proper housing;
- making referrals for health, mental health or other needed services;
- providing supervision and training to Classification Counselor Trainees;
- Adhering to agency core values.
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university recognized by the State of Maryland; Ability to pass an extensive background check and drug screening; Prior completion of the Entry-Level Correctional Training Academy; Must possess a general understanding of directives and general order, as well as officer safety; Ability to quickly learn geographical layout of the Wicomico County Detention Center facility; Must successfully complete training in defensive and control tactics, and conflict resolution; Must possess good general communication skills (both written and oral), interpersonal skills, problem-solving skills, and team-building skills; and Valid Driver's License.
