The Williamsport Area School District is accepting applications for anticipated Long Term Substitute teachers, K-12 All Schools, for the 2024-2025 school year. Location and assignment will be District Wide; or as determined by the Superintendent. Appropriate, valid PDE Certification required. Important Information for WASD Employees:

The District agreed to amend its message sent to WEA members on 4/13/18 regarding Article 41 of the new CBA and bidding on vacancies within the district. The criteria used for determining eligibility when applying for posted vacancies is "seniority date". This date is a reference to the employee’s start date as a permanent employee with the district.

  • Professional staff who have been in the District fewer than four years, must complete 4 years before applying for internal vacancies.
  • Any employee who voluntarily transfers in to a position beginning with the 2018-19 school year must be in that position for at least 5 years before bidding on vacancies again.

BASIC FUNCTION

The Long- Term Substitute Teacher plans and administers the instructional program and classroom operation (he/she is assigned to as a substitute teacher) in compliance with guidelines and regulations determined by the administration, Board of Directors, state and federal agencies. He/she will create an environment that encourages learning, motivates students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to continue a firm foundation and perpetuate the learning experience for students. The Long-Term Substitute Teacher will utilize all resources available to maintain a cooperative relationship with parents, staff members and administrators to support each student's opportunity to learn and grow in educational and life experiences.


The position of a Long-Term Substitute Teacher is one that expires at the end of the school year. His/Her assignment is at the discretion of the Superintendent and/or his/her designee. The position may include an assignment of day to day substitute, extended day to day substitute and/or remote teaching within his/her certificated grade span. The position follows the employee schedule of a 188-day WEA position and shall include active participation in the school's operation to support a positive learning environment. This position reports to and is evaluated semi-annually and annually by the Building Principal and/or his/her designee. An individual appointed to a long-term substitute teacher position shall be provided with prorated salary and benefits. Appointment to a long-term substitute teacher position does not guarantee future employment.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

The requirements for this position are a minimum of a bachelor's degree and appropriate Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) certification and qualifications prescribed by law.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

The Long-Term Substitute Teacher will demonstrate proficiency in the applicable WASD curriculum, Benchmarks, PA Standards, and appropriate assessments. He/She must possess the knowledge, pedagogical abilities and attitudes necessary to be a successful scholar, decision maker and agent for curriculum enhancement. The Long-Term Substitute Teacher must be aware of and comfortable using computer and technological applications as educational tools, including but not limited to Microsoft Office and curriculum-based software.


AUTHORITY AND RESPONSIBILITIES: ((E) Designates Essential Functions)


  • Teaches necessary skills, based on subject assignment, utilizing the course of study provided by the District and adopted by the Board of Directors. (E)
  • Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter as specified in state laws, regulations and District policies. (E)
  • Develops clear and appropriate lesson plans and identifies instructional materials on a weekly basis (minimum). (E)
  • Selects, designs and organizes objectives, strategies and materials for teaching his/her assigned subject matter, and incorporates research findings in the instructional program. (E)
  • Provides individualized and small group instruction (as necessary) to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student. He/she will have the ability to teach at various levels of instruction, including advanced placement courses. He/she will be able to determine the appropriate pace for instruction related to students' abilities and explain material and subject content to students and parents. He/she will be able to differentiate instruction for students based upon need and works with students and other teachers in inclusive settings. (E)
  • Establishes and maintains standards of behavior in the classroom and throughout the school to achieve a positive and functional learning atmosphere for students. (E)
  • Evaluates students' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, prepares student progress reports, and provides accurate and constructive feedback to students and parents (as necessary). (E)
  • Uses data to improve the learning and instruction process. (E)
  • Cooperates with other professional staff members to identify student needs and develop assessments to solve health, attitude and learning problems. (E)
  • Creates an effective learning environment. (E)
  • Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned work day (if applicable). (E)
  • Administers group standardized tests in accordance with District regulations. (E)
  • Participates in curriculum development programs. (E)
  • Participates in faculty committees, meetings and other faculty sponsored programs supporting the educational program. (E)
  • Maintains professional competence through District sponsored in-service programs and approved professional development activities. (E)
  • Demonstrates regular and timely attendance. (E)
  • Is able to speak and write in a clear, concise manner. (E)
  • Is able to move throughout the building (all floors) and school grounds as necessary. (E)
  • Collaborates and cooperates with other professional staff members and administrators in facilitating the delivery of the entire educational program to students, to include art, ESC, music, physical education, remedial and gifted programs. (E)
  • Follows all Board policies, and building procedures and submits required information and reports within identified timelines. (E)
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Building Principal, Superintendent or his/her designee. (E)

Physical Requirements:


Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or exert up to 10 lbs. of force and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Involves sitting, walking throughout the building(s) and/or standing for brief periods of time.


Auditory and Visual Requirements:

Within normal ranges with or without correction.


Equipment Used:

Office equipment such as computers, fax machines, telephones, copiers, scanners and printers, etc. The appropriate learning and navigation of learning management systems, digital tools, and external devices (cameras, whiteboards, microphones, dual monitors, etc.)
