SUMMARY:

The Controller is responsible for organizing, directing, and evaluating a wide variety of financial

activities including the planning and development of the College's basic system of accounting and

financial control. The position is responsible for the Business Office, Accounts Payable, Student

Accounts and Receivables, Payroll, and Endowments and Auxiliary Accounting. The Controller

serves as a member of the Audit Committee and Finance Committee and reports to the Chief

Financial Officer. He will work in close collaboration with members of the President's staff in all

areas of financial responsibility.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

● Directly supervises and maintains quality control of the following areas: accounts payable,

accounts receivable, student finance, general ledger, purchasing card, debt service

accounting, construction and fixed assets accounting, grants accounting, and credit

card/ACH processing.

Prepare routine and ad hoc financial reports including analysis for senior management

● Lead and oversee the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes.

● Serve as a key member of the leadership team, contributing financial expertise to

business decisions.

● Develop and maintain accurate cash flow projections to support strategic planning.

● Implement strategies to optimize cash management.

● Prepare and analyze journal entries, ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting

standards.

● Generate comprehensive financial statements for review.

● Establish and enforce financial policies and procedures to ensure consistency and

compliance.

● Works with external auditors and provides needed information for the audits.

● Work with external firms to provide needed information for annual tax preparation

● Support and advise the Board of Directors in financial decision-making.

● Assist in the preparation of the annual budget whereby organizational needs are

identified, consensus on priorities is obtained and translates the consensus into a financial

plan.

● Directly supervises Accountants, Payroll, Student Accounts, Accounts Payable &

Receivable, and the Finance Office.

● Coordinate fiscal year-end close and prepare the College's annual financial statements and

corporate tax returns.

● Develop and administer fiscal plans, policies, and procedures in compliance with Generally

Accepted Accounting Principles and industry best practices.

● Direct financial reporting to meet regulatory and campus needs.

● Provide consultative assistance to administrative units of the College in the interpretation

of financial and budget information.

● Design, establish, and maintain an organizational structure and staffing to effectively

accomplish organizational goals and objectives; recruit, employ, train, supervise, and

evaluate personnel staff.

● Lead HLC and other accreditation efforts.

● Participate on campus and community committees that serve to benefit the mission of the

College and the Finance Area programs.

● Remain actively involved in professional activities that are relative to the position.

● Foster positive relationships with all external and internal constituencies served by the

College.

● Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

● Effective oral and written communication skills

● Knowledge of and experience with complex computer-based financial management

systems, including system upgrades.

● Strong leadership and administrative skills including, but not limited to: strategic planning,

personnel, budget and resource management, and continuous improvement assessment of

the unit's operations in all areas.

● Strong analytical, critical thinking, project management, problem recognition, and

resolution skills.

● Knowledge and possession of high professional standards and a personal code of ethics

characterized by honesty, integrity, openness, and fairness.

● Knowledge of higher education funding sources and related policy issues.

● Ability to interpret and appropriately apply accounting principles and regulations

● Ability to develop and administer fiscal plans, financial systems, policies and procedures.

● Ability and experience in generating timely and accurate financial information and reports.

● Ability and experience developing, implementing and maintaining internal controls to

effectively safeguard and manage finance resources.

● Ability to communicate financial information to all levels of staff and the public

effectively, both verbally and in writing

● Ability to manage time and deliver projects in an environment of competing priorities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

● Bachelor's degree in accounting, CPA preferred.

● Minimum 10 years of accounting experience in a non-profit environment, preferably

within a higher education.

● Knowledge of Generally Acceptable Accounting Principles.

● Minimum of five years progressive experience in business/financial services, preferably

within a higher education or other non-profit organization.

● Minimum 5 years experience with Jenzabar and Jenzabar One.

● Experience in performing controller functions including oversight of general ledger,

accounts receivable, accounts payable, and cash management functions.

● Experience with OMB Circular A-133 audit, form 5500 audit, and 990 preparation and

submission (Required).
