Status & Classification: Regular | Part-Time | Non-Exempt

Payrate: $30 ~ $40/hour (depending on experience)

Work Schedule: Tuesdays & Wednesdays | 8am ~ 4pm | < 20 hours/week*

*This position must accommodate a flexible work schedule with variable hours.

Summary

The Aerospace Projects Educator is responsible for accomplishing Wings Museum's onsite educational mandate and responsibilities. This position exists to facilitate Wings Aerospace Exploration (WAE) programs and help promote educational outreach. The Aerospace Projects Educator is a member of the Education department who works closely with the Education Program Manager, Education Program Coordinator, and Aerospace Educators. This position reports to the Director of Education.

Founded in 1994 on the former Lowry Air Force Base in east Denver's historic Lowry Field neighborhood, Wings Over the Rockies is a non-profit community organization dedicated to unlocking dreams of flight through exhibits, local events, and educational programming. We are Colorado’s official Air & Space Museum having been recognized by CNN Travel as one of their 20 Best aviation museums in the world. Each year we welcome roughly 160,000 visitors representing all 50 states and dozens of countries internationally. Wings is committed to diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. The Museum boasts more than 100,000 sq. ft. of open hangar space full of iconic aircraft, space vehicles, historical artifacts, and more. Visitors can experience thrilling flight simulators, discover educational programs, and participate in one of our many exciting Museum-sponsored events.

Exploration of Flight (EoF) is our flight-focused educational extension. This 15-acre campus is located at the Centennial Airport where we offer showcase events with a variety of aircraft, aviation immersion programs, pilot ground training, and flight experiences. EoF is home to our Blue Sky Gallery exhibit and interactive aviation center featuring an airworthy fleet of civilian and military aircraft.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Please Note - this list is not all inclusive but intended to be a general guide to the essential duties of this position.

  • Create and oversee aerospace courses, aircraft build projects, and other courses for WAE programs
  • Train and certify (per Museum standards) volunteers to act as classroom/shop floor paraprofessionals in support of ongoing teaching and learning
  • Supervise, document, and record safety training, safety best practices, and safety equipment for students and staff as needed
  • Coordinate and originate programs with post-secondary institutions, specifically those who offer a path to airframe and power plant licensure and related ratings
  • Assist in negotiating Memorandums Of Understanding (MOU’s)
  • Maintain facilities, tools, and supplies needed for program coursework
  • Work with the Director of Education to coordinate new aircraft projects, vendors, supply needs, etc.
  • Support and assist Education program staff with daily operations and outreach as needed

Working Conditions

The Air & Space Museum operates within an 80-year-old aircraft hangar. Exploration of Flight is located at a busy regional airport. Environmental conditions may vary.

Requirements:
  • Aviation Mechanic (A&P) certification
  • Must be at least twenty-one (21 ) years of age or older
  • Prior experience as an instructor or teacher in formal or informal settings
  • Comprehensive knowledge of aircraft maintenance
  • Able to communicate clearly and positively with students
  • Experienced operating aircraft tools/equipment and reading schematics
  • Prior experience building experimental or other aircraft is highly preferred
  • Personal pilot's license is desirable but not required
  • Self-motivated, energetic, outcome-oriented individual who demonstrates strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills
  • Team-player experienced working on group projects
  • Ability to deal professionally and sensitively with a diverse audience
  • Computer proficiency including Office 365 and Google Workspace
  • Commitment to program diversity and inclusion
  • Able to operate in a workshop setting, tolerate loud noises, dust, odors, etc.
  • Must be able to push, pull, squat, and lift 50 lbs.
  • CPR/First Aid certified (preferred) or attend Wings-sponsored CPR training
