0.75 - 1.0 FTE, 60 - 80 Hours a Pay Period
Days, Hours between 5 am - 5 pm (10 Hour Shifts)
Weekends: Every Other Weekend (Friday-Saturday)
Holidays: Every Third Holiday

Position Overview:

The Registered Nurse (RN) is a health care professional who is skilled in all aspects of the nursing process. They are adaptable to the myriad of needs of the individual and family during health and illness. The RN is responsible and accountable for the delivery of individualized nursing care to patients having hemodialysis as well as being responsible for the direction of staff members assigned to them.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • The RN has an advanced understanding of the Nursing Practice Process including assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the dialysis patient which they use while providing direct dare including physical, psychological, social, spiritual and educational needs of the patient and family.
  • The RN modifies the plan of care based on the needs of the patient, consults with the medical staff about changes in the patient's condition and documents all pertinent data in the patient's medical record.
  • Keeps updated on current nursing practice, medications, and legal issues related to patient-based services. Follows AAMI guidelines when preparing for dialysis.

Manages care of patients during dialysis including, but not limited to:

  • Monitors vitals, needle pressures, temperature of the machine, conductivity, transmembrane pressure of the dialyzer, ultrafiltration rate, and amount.
  • Administers blood and blood products and all dialysis medications.
  • Verifies patient's allergies and medications.
  • Performs and documents assessments pre, during and post dialysis.

When acting as charge:

  • Acts as a resource to other staff, assessing patients, problem solving and patient placement.
  • Facilitates the assignment and delivery of nursing care.
  • Assures adequate staffing for the upcoming shift.
  • Assures that all staff are managing time wisely.
  • Delegates unit tasks to appropriate staff members and verifies that tasks are completed.
  • Assigns staff members to a specific function during emergency situations (codes, disasters, etc.).
  • Assists staff in accurately interpreting and supporting departmental philosophy, objective, policies, and procedures.
  • Keeps Clinic Manager informed in a timely manner regarding occurrences/incidents on shift.
  • Assures that the time schedules, staffing summaries, and census sheets are maintained with current information.
  • Is knowledgeable of changing acuity levels and directs the physician to which patient they should see next.
  • Acts as the triage nurse.
  • Follows recommended infection control procedures when caring for patients.
  • Is constantly vigilant to the safety needs of the patient, taking necessary precautions as warranted.
  • Reports malfunctioning equipment promptly and removes from the patient care area to maintain a safe environment.
  • Conforms to the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Assists in gathering performance improvement data as requested/assigned.
  • Participates in the quality control of reprocessing equipment and dialysis machines.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Experience:

Required:

  • Associates or Bachelors Degree in Nursing
  • BLS Certification
  • Participation in ongoing continuing education process
  • RN License - MN
  • Verbalizes role in codes
  • Completes and passes the "Ishihara Test for Color Deficiency" prior to employment
  • Basic Computer Skills: Word, Excel, Outlook, and Patient Information Database (Cerner)
