Animal Care Intern - Ozaukee Campus

Position Description

Are you looking to gain animal care experience, build your resume, and get your foot in the door to a career in the animal welfare field?  Then this opportunity is for you!  The Wisconsin Humane Society’s Ozaukee Campus has an opportunity for a dependable, hardworking, and well-organized individual to join our team as part-time Animal Care Intern, working approximately 20 hours/week. This is a paid, seasonal opportunity; however, interns will be responsible for their own transportation and living arrangements as we are unable to provide housing or transportation.

Position Summary

Responsibilities:

• Clean and sanitize animal suites and facility while maintaining high standards of cleanliness
• Demonstrate safe and appropriate animal handling
• Providing animals with food, water, enrichment, and other essential daily needs
• Assist the behavior and veterinary staff as needed
• Maintaining detailed and accurate records in our animal management software
• Assist the behavior and veterinary staff as needed
• Other miscellaneous duties as assigned

Qualifications & Requirements

• Availability to work some evenings, a weekend shift, and holidays
• Must be able to routinely carry 25lbs and up to 50lbs

• Prior animal care experience a plus
• Bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply

Animal Care Interns work in a physically demanding, fast paced environment. Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent, be able to work independently and in a team environment, and have strong attention to detail. The availability to work on evenings, weekends and holidays is a must. Interns should be committed to working the entire length of the 6 month internship time period. Candidates must be committed to treating animals and humans with kindness and respect.

The Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) is the oldest and largest shelter in Wisconsin. It was founded in 1879 and operates shelters in Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Door, and Brown Counties, as well as a Spay/Neuter Clinic in West Allis. The organization offers adoption services, educational programming, and veterinary resources for animals from low-income households, retail stores, volunteer programs and dog training classes. The Milwaukee shelter also houses the states busiest Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.
