Position Summary: The triage coordinator’s primary job function is to triage all medically related incoming patient telephone calls and Follow My Health EMR messages, in addition to providing patients with test results, medical information, and treatment plans as ordered by the physician or per standing order. Responsibilities also include documenting the aforementioned information into the patient’s electronic medical record (EMR), as well as scheduling ultrasounds and urgent same day appointments per established medical problem protocol.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Answers patient phone calls in a pleasant manner and assess patient needs to triage call appropriately.
  • Ensures that patient calls are forwarded to appropriate departments.
  • Documents pertinent information into the patient’s electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Responds to patients’ medical questions using approved protocol.
  • Forwards messages to appropriate care provider to either respond to the patient’s medical question or approve response given to the patient by the triage staff.
  • Responds to EMR patient messages.
  • Ensures patient prescriptions are sent to their pharmacies in the appropriate manner and that medications are documented in EMR.
  • Schedules patients with appropriate care provider to address specific medical issues. This includes scheduling all necessary diagnostic testing.
  • Discusses lab results and results of diagnostic procedures with patients and provide appropriate documentation in EMR.
  • Ensures appropriate information is relayed to and from the hospital and care provider for admitted patients.
  • Researches and obtain pertinent information on specific procedures or medications as instructed by a care provider.
  • Assures compliance with HIPPA & OSHA regulations.
Qualifications, Skills and Knowledge Requirements
  • 2 to 3 years’ experience working in an obstetric and gynecology clinic or private office.
  • Knowledge of basic nursing principles, medical terminology, and protocols. Knowledge of policies and procedures related to infection control, environmental safety, and patient confidentiality. Proper knowledge of medical chart documentation.
  • Ability to work effectively with physicians, team members and other staff. Ability to appropriately interact with patients, families, staff, and others. Ability to flexibly respond to changing demands.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions
Job requires limited physical contact with patient. Varied activities including sitting, walking, lifting, bending, and reaching. Must be able to use a variety of office equipment including telephone, PC, fax, and medical equipment including stethoscope and blood pressure cuff.
Education:
Nurse program Completion of a Certified Medical Assistant, Licensed Practical Nursing or Registered Nurse
Completion of Certified Medical Assistant or Licensed Practical Nursing program
