What are the responsibilities and job description for the Culinary Arts Instructor- Long Term Substitute position at Woonsocket Area Career and Technical Center?
Function: A culinary arts instructor applies both academic and first hand training for students to become chefs and gain professional skills for the food service industry. As a culinary arts teacher, you develop lessons that follow the Education Management Corporation curriculum (EDMC) to ensure an effective learning experience and provide both visual and hands-on education in a kitchen setting. Your responsibilities include understanding student needs, creating customized lesson plans, and communicating with administration. Other duties may include staying up-to-date on current culinary trends, techniques, and proper practices, as well as attending workshops, PD and Advisory Board meetings.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist Lead instructor to maintain a standard of sanitation and cleanliness of kitchen utensils, equipment and Heart of House areas.
Ensure high levels of food quality, presentation and cost control.
Ensure on-hand inventory reflects par levels set by Lead Instructor.
Follow recipe and/or product specifications for preparing, seasoning, cooking, tasting, carving and serving food in the establishment.
Operate a variety of kitchen equipment (i.e. choppers, mixing machine, slicers, steamers, grills, et al).
Control food waste, loss and usage. Work with the Lead Instructor to set plans and actions (co-teach).
Prepare food to order with respect to guest specifications. Assist Lead Instructor to prepare, produce and serve food for functions.
Assist in verifying food is stored correctly and rotated in accordance with local health code specifications.
Ensure food quality by completing thorough line checks and tasting/testing food on a class-by- class basis.
Assist Lead Instructor in ongoing learning/training of all students with respect to food and production and theory.
Assist Lead Instructor in conducting weekly inventory of all food and paper items in the WACTC Culinary Arts program.
Assist teacher in planning and implementing academic instruction.
Assist in maintaining appropriate data and records (i.e. attendance, progress monitoring, assessment data).
Perform other duties as directed or required by WACTC Director/WHS Principal
Qualifications:
Culinary Arts RIDE Certification (applicant must meet all the requirements of the CTE certification per RIDE)
Minimum of 5 years (within the last 7 years) full-time employment related to culinary and pastry arts
Strong baking and pastry skills preferred
Ability to demonstrate skills and working knowledge of various working methods including but not limited to deep-frying, saute, roasting, steaming, poaching and braising.
Working knowledge of restaurant, banquet/catering, small cafe food production and food truck operations are required.
Three plus years experience as a culinary arts prostart instructor preferred.
Knowledge of National Restaurant Association Education Foundation Prostart Curriculum.
Proficient in the American Culinary Federation (ACF) skills and standards certification process.
Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
Ability to supervise a team of 10 students while delegating tasks and consistent follow-up to ensure quality of food
Graduate of an accredited hospitality management or culinary program preferred, but not required.
