What are the responsibilities and job description for the Head Rowing Coach position at Wyoming Seminary?

Wyoming Seminary Upper School seeks a Head Rowing Coach to start in February 2022. Wyoming Seminary's rowing program is a member of the Philadelphia Scholastic Rowing Association (PSRA), competing in sculling events at scholastic regattas in Philadelphia and New Jersey. In addition to the varsity spring season and optional winter training, Wyoming Seminary partners with Harveys Lake Rowing Club to offer competitive programming in the summer and fall. Wyoming Seminary offers a substantial need-based financial aid program to support students from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds. This position will be responsible for the continued growth and development of a young but well-supported scholastic rowing program. The successful candidate will possess the vision and drive to build a stellar varsity sports program along with the desire and ability to develop student-athletes. The successful candidate will also work with Harveys Lake Rowing Club, either filling the role of Head Coach for the club or collaborating closely with the club head coach. In addition, each Wyoming Seminary faculty member and coach is expected to demonstrate ability in the following areas:

  • Fosters and stewards a culture of mutual respect, equitable practice, and joy on and off of the playing field/court/ice.
  • Demonstrates cultural competency skills to collaborate effectively across differences.
  • Sets high expectations for learning, achievement and character development.
  • Exhibits strong working knowledge of student cognitive development and learning preferences.
  • Identifies and supports students’ social, emotional and physical ability needs.
  • Provides timely feedback to student-athletes and offers specialized support in pursuit of each athlete’s goals.
  • Implements a wide array of coaching tools and strategies in appropriate and effective combinations.
  • Designs formal and informal assessments that measure student-athlete progress.
  • Fosters students’ athletic growth through structured opportunities for reflection.
  • Creates relevant and authentic learning experiences; is able to include and/or connect with outside experts and resources towards this aim.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Working with the Athletic Department on scheduling regattas.
  • Working with the Admission Office to successfully recruit mission appropriate applicants to join the school community.
  • Oversight of the development and progress of each child.
  • Clear communication with parents.
  • Collaborative work with Director of Athletics and Athletic Department colleagues, Upper and School faculty and staff, and the broader school community.
  • Oversight of school rowing equipment and assistance in maintaining club facilities and equipment (boats, oars, rowing machines, launches, trailer).

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated coaching experience with adolescents in this age group.
  • A passion for athletic competition and the ability to motivate and inspire athletes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to building a diverse, equitable and inclusive school community.
  • Personal traits appropriate for nurturing the growth of children - must be fun, energetic, creative, flexible, and patient.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to drive a boat trailer (or willingness to learn).
  • Ability to make minor-moderate boat repairs (or willingness to learn).
