Job Description
This role is responsible for supporting the design and development of systems and components for a commercial nuclear power plant project. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the reliability of nuclear systems across all phases of design, from conceptual development through licensing and detailed engineering. The position defines reliability requirements, evaluates engineering designs, and guides multi-disciplinary teams in implementing reliability best practices aligned with regulatory and industry standards.
Job Profile Tasks/Responsibilities:
- Define, document, and manage system and component reliability requirements for mechanical, electrical, and control systems within a nuclear power plant context.
- Develop reliability best practices and criteria that support the design and development of nuclear/non-nuclear systems and components
- Support design development across all phases—conceptual, preliminary, detailed, and final—by providing subject matter expertise on reliability implications and design trade-offs.
- Conduct and/or support reliability analyses and assessments such as:
- Markov Chain Analysis
- Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA/FMECA)
- Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
- Event Tree Analysis (ETA)
- Life data and Weibull analysis
- Participate in and support design and hazard reviews, identifying and mitigating reliability-related risks early in the design lifecycle.
- Interface with system design engineers, systems engineering, PRA analysts, and other technical disciplines to integrate reliability into system architecture.
- Assist in the development of maintenance strategies, surveillance requirements, and system health monitoring approaches based on reliability objectives.
- Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, codes, and standards (e.g., NRC, ASME, IEEE, ISO).
- Contribute to licensing documentation, engineering deliverables, and technical reports.
- Maintain professional demeanor and behavior at all times in all forms of communication.
- Perform other duties as assigned by manager.
Job Profile Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Nuclear, Systems, or related discipline) from an accredited university.
- Typically, 10-15 years of experience in a reliability engineering or closely related role.
- A master’s degree in engineering or related field (may include a combination of experience obtained through an academic institution, e.g., design projects, research, or design teams, as well as professional experience) may be in lieu of two years of experience.
- A Ph.D. in engineering or related field (may include a combination of experience obtained through an academic institution, e.g., design projects, research, or design teams, as well as professional experience) may be in lieu of three years of experience.
- Experience applying reliability engineering principles and tools (FMEA/FMECA, FTA, etc.).
- Strong analytical, technical writing, and verbal communication skills.
Location: Rockville, MD
Work Site Expectations: Onsite 4 days in office
Travel Expectations: 10%
Hours: 8:00am-5:00pm, Mon-Fri
A reasonable estimate for this position at the level of experience required is:
Level IV: $105,375- $175,625/ Level V: $116,850- $194,750
