Objective:
Under the direction of the Healthy Living Director, the Group Exercise Instructor will teach and administer YMCA Group Exercise Fitness classes.
Job Responsibilities: The Group Exercise instructor is responsible for instructing exercise programs under the YMCA guidelines, and planning the class to assist in meeting the goals and objectives of the Clark County Family YMCA.
Job Specifics:
• Select proper exercises for the group’s level of fitness
• Dress appropriately and professionally
• Ensure a safe exercise environment
• Stay current using continuing education to maintain and grow proper/required certifications in group exercise
• Recommend and promote other Y programs as appropriate
• Start and finish classes as scheduled and on time
• Have a class plan or choreography ready for the classes you teach
• Select and prepare appropriate music if used, ensure appropriate volume level in the studio
• Know the facilities emergency plan
• Make sure all equipment works properly, notify the group exercise supervisor of any equipment in need of repair or adjustment.
• Ensure floors are clean and dry, remove potential hazards from room if necessary
• Read through class announcements or questions as provided
• Be ready to greet members and set up your class 15 minutes prior to class starting, and plan to stay 15 minutes after class to help breakdown your class equipment and meet with members
• Complete a radio check to ensure radios are working in the studio prior to teaching
• Make sure all equipment is put away in an orderly fashion and speakers are turned off when finished with class instruction.
• Ensure proper social distancing and other COVID guidelines are maintained
Essential Functions:
• Incorporate and Model our YMCA Christian principles into your work
• Commit to establishing long-term relationships with staff, volunteers, participants, members and families
• Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with both members and staff and give directions in an authoritative, yet tactful manner
• Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency situation
• Ability to adequately observe participant activities, enforce safety regulations, apply appropriate techniques and cue movements appropriately
• Ability to effectively use standard software including those required online trainings, scheduling software and manage audio equipment with Bluetooth functionality
• Ability to perform high/low aerobic fitness, starter or senior fitness, step aerobics, flexibility, and/or strength classes
• Present information understandably
• Ability to accurately demonstrate exercises/movements
• Ability to clearly give instructions and directions
• Able to speak loud enough (or use the microphone) to be heard by all
• Understand and apply basic fitness principles
• Ability to teach to a class with varied abilities, from health seeker to athlete
Required Qualifications:
Experience as a participant in exercise training or sports activity & general knowledge of exercise training
• CPR/AED/First Aid, Foundations of YMCA Group Exercise or nationally recognized certification
• Experience using basic computer software and audio equipment.
• Must pass YMCA background check
• Certification in specific formats, such as boot camp, barre, cycling, or other
• Experience as a participant in exercise training or sports activity & general knowledge of exercise training
Preferred Qualifications:
• At least two years of experience instructing group exercise
• YMCA certifications
• General knowledge of exercise training or sports activity
• Personal training certification
