POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Child Care Teacher implements

programs and curriculum in the preschool and/or school age child care classroom. Provides a quality experience to

children and parents that is focused on the YMCA Core Values: Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, and Caring in

accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Implement active learning curriculum within the established guidelines.
  • Design and implement daily lesson/activity plans.
  • Supervise the children, classroom, and all activities, always maintaining child/staff ratios within the licensing law requirements of Oregon.
  • Make ongoing, systematic observations, and evaluations of each child.
  • Maintain confidentiality with information concerning children and families.
  • Maintain program site and equipment.
  • Maintain required program records.
  • Attend and participate in scheduled program activities, staff meetings, and staff training.
  • Complete accident reports and behavior forms as needed.
  • Plan, organize, and implement age appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities.
  • Carry out appropriate and positive discipline as established by the Child Care Department.

SECONDARY TASKS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Communicate regularly with parents and act as a resource person for them.
  • Mandatory reporter of suspected abuse and/or neglect of children, elders and individuals with disabilities.
  • Make sound judgments and transfers learning from one situation to another.
  • Embrace new approaches and discovers ideas to create a better child experience.
  • Establish goals, clarify tasks, plan work and actively participate in meetings.
  • Strive to meet or exceed goals and deliver a high-value experience for children and families.
  • Living by the YMCA’s core values – Honesty, Caring, Respect, Responsibility.

EFFORT Lift up to 50 lbs

(sustained/frequent mental or physical exertion needed for & attributes of a job)

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILL LEVEL AT JOB ENTRY

Skill Level at Entry: Intermediate

  • Work at least 2 years, full-time, with at least one year as a teacher aide in a certified child-care facility.
  • Previous experience working with children in a developmental setting preferred.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement age appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities.
  • Previous experience with diverse populations.
  • Works effectively with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions, and perceptions.
  • Builds rapport and relates well to others.
  • Seeks first to understand the other person's point of view, and remains calm in challenging situations.
  • Listens for understanding and meaning; speaks and writes effectively.
  • Takes an initiative to assist in developing others.
  • Physical stamina to participate with children in all activities.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Be enrolled (and maintain enrollment) in the Oregon Dept. of Education’s Central Background Registry upon

  • employment.
  • Food Handler's Certificate, prior to starting job duties.
  • Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect (RRCAN)
  • Introduction to Child Care Health and Safety (ICCHS)
  • Pass a background check.
  • CPR/AED/First Aid certification within 60 days.
  • Minimum age of 18 (law or regulation).
  • Meets minimum standards for a Child-care Teacher per state of Oregon regulations.
