POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum age of 16
Current lifeguard certifications required (including Jefferson County Board of Health if required)
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Previous lifeguard and/or swim instructor experience preferred

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Uphold the mission of the YMCA, and demonstrate behaviors that reflect a determined, nurturing, genuine, hopeful, and welcoming nature.
Maintains constant surveillance of the pool area
Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures
Completes all related reports as required by the YMCA of Greater Louisville
Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area
Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the local Health Department code
Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed
Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving
Performs chemical testing as required by the Aquatics’ Director
Attends all staff meetings and training as required by the Aquatics’ Director
Maintains effective relationships with the members, participants and other staff
Maintain all certifications as required to keep the Lifeguard certification current
Work all assigned shifts and/or follow appropriate substitution policies
Attends all staff meetings and trainings as required by the Aquatics’ Director
Completes required abuse risk management training. Adheres to policies and procedures related to appropriate boundaries with children. Monitors building, staff and members and reports suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations to supervisor. Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements to authorities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Ability to pass lifeguard water test
Must be able to remain alert
Work in a wet/humid environment and come into contact with chlorine
Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods
Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals
Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision
Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue
Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations
Environment may include indoor and/or outdoor pool conditions
Ability to lift 25 pounds
