POSITION SUMMARY
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Manager on Duty at the YMCA of Ithaca and Tompkins County is responsible for total building safety, security, and supervision in the absence of leadership staff in order to ensure a positive member and program participant experience. The Manager on Duty enforces all membership and building policies while making periodic checks of all areas of the building and grounds, giving potential member tours, and handling any management level questions and all emergencies.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
- Develops and maintains positive relationships with members and guests, intentionally welcoming, connecting, and supporting them while inviting involvement and community contribution.
- Provides excellent service to members, guests, and program participants in the Y facility and on the phone, especially when handling complaints and inquiries.
- Handles and attempts to resolve member and guest concerns, informing appropriate leadership staff when no resolution is reached.
- Responds to and manages all emergencies and member/guest/employee injuries.
- Ensures the safety and security of the YMCA facility and members/guests/employees by making regular rounds of the building and grounds, addressing any areas of concern.
- Enforces building closing times, ensuring all areas are cleared, closed, and secured according to facility standards.
- Ensures that walkways and entrances are clear and accessible at all times.
- Completes daily reports, highlighting items that may provide a health or safety hazard, member/guest behavioral issues, staff report times, etc.
- Ensures all staff on duty are acting as positive role models of the Y mission and reporting to supervisors when behavior contradictory to this is displayed.
- Walks throughout the facility, interacting with staff and members using the YMCA’s service and engagement principles.
- Assists with tours and the welcome desk during prime-time hours.
- Acts as the first point of contact for any facility issues or incidents. If an incident occurs, the MOD will ensure the incident is documented appropriately.
- Completes and submits the Manager on Duty Report at the end of the shift and shares it with the leadership staff for review.
- Applies and enforces all YMCA policies and is proactive with information and knowledge of all program information and changes.
- Supports Front Desk and other departments as needed.
- Performs all other duties as assigned by supervisor, or other Leadership Team Members.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of 18 years of age.
- Minimum of high school diploma or GED.
- Previous building safety/security/management and/or customer service experience.
- Possess the competence and confidence to supervise a safe environment for all members, program participants, volunteers, and staff.
- Demonstrate the ability to cooperate and work with other Y staff to provide a quality environment.
- Work history that demonstrates strong work ethic, punctuality, and reliable attendance.
- First Aid, CPR/AED, and Emergency O2 Administration Certifications required within 30 days of hire (provided by YMCA).
- Excellent interpersonal, observation, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
- Be friendly and professional at all times, while also enforcing policies fairly.
- Ability to work independently without direct supervision.
- Basic knowledge of computers and computer applications.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to move around the building between two stories on a continuous basis.

- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.
