Adaptive Swim Instructor

Position Summary

A YMCA Outreach Adaptive Swim Instructor Swim Instructor provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students with special needs in swimming lessons and water safety events in the community. 

Essential Functions

• Instructs swimming lessons to individuals with special needs as assigned in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
• Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
• Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
• Organizes and puts away needed class equipment.  Reports damaged equipment.
• Trains and supervises class aides and volunteers as assigned.
• May be asked to attend community events sharing information on Drowning Prevention
• Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers members and participants to other YMCA programs.
• Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
• May be asked to conduct classroom based water safety education to children and/or adults
• Encourages participant involvement and identifies potential volunteers.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience

• Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification.
• Previous experience working with Individuals with Special Needs (required)
• Previous experience working with Individuals with Special Needs in swimming lessons or swim coaching (preferred) 
• Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
• YMCA Swim Instructor certification or previous experience teaching swimming.
• At least 16 years of age.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques
• Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child
