Position Summary

The YMCA of Southern Nevada is looking for year-round lifeguards to join our team! Not yet lifeguard certified? No problem! Apply today, then email jsawyer@lasvegasymca.org to learn how to register for a certification course. This is a part-time in person position for morning and mid-day shifts at the Centennial Hills YMCA (6601 N Buffalo Drive, Las Vegas) and mid-day shifts at the Durango Hills YMCA (3521 North Durango Drive, Las Vegas).

Responsibilities

  • Enforce aquatic safety and maintenance standards and guidelines.
  • Monitor all activities in the aquatic area. Assure the safety of members and guests as the single overriding objective.
  • Instruct swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly or by following provided plans.
  • Maintain attendance and skill accomplishment records.
  • Promote association programs and objectives as well as the national goals of the YMCA, including character development.
  • Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Complete incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • Maintain needed aquatic certifications.

Abuse Risk Management Functions

  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers.
  • Attend required abuse risk management training.
  • Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
  • Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.
  • Adhere to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.
  • Report essential abuse risk management information to their supervisor, executive director, or human resources.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • This job requires the following physical demands. Reasonable accommodation may be made.
  • The employee regularly works in outside weather conditions and is regularly exposed to extreme cold and extreme heat. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.
  • The employee is regularly required to use hands, some fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.
  • Must display visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents as well as the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency situation.
  • Ability to adequately observe participant activities, enforce safety regulations, and apply appropriate management techniques.
  • Must successfully pass a water test consisting of various strokes and general swimming skills.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Highschool diploma or GED, or degree in progress.
  • Minimum of three months’ relevant experience or training.
  • Must successfully pass a water test consisting of lifeguard strokes and general rescue skills.
  • Must be 15 years of age or older.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations

  • Current YMCA or American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification
  • Current CPR for the Professional Rescuer (includes AED), First Aid, and O2 Certifications

All certifications can be obtained through the YMCA after applying.
