What are the responsibilities and job description for the Group Exercise Instructor - Valley Branch position at YMCA of The Inland Northwest?
POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Group Exercise Instructor is responsible for providing instruction and support for the Health and Wellness department. The Group Exercise Instructor provides a safe and friendly environment while they lead members through a fitness program. Seeking cycling, TRX, step, barre and body conditioning instructors.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Teach group exercise classes, or any other programming as part of the Health & Wellness Department, in a manner that is safe and effective.
2. Teach classes in a welcoming manner with options that make exercises accessible to Health Seekers.
3. Maintain certifications on annual basis or as certifications require.
4. Facilitate open communication between immediate supervisor, YMCA staff, volunteers and members to create strong relationships and build ownership.
5. Demonstrate through action and interaction with staff, YMCA members and the public, the Four Character Development Principles of the YMCA: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
6. Participate and assist in additional YMCA activities, trainings or meetings when requested, to include at least a quarterly staff meeting.
7. Interpret and communicates the Mission, objectives, and programs to Members and program participants.
8. Maintain the policies and procedures set for the facility and group exercise classes.
9. Responsible for the safety and wellbeing of each individual in class.
10. Create a motivating environment that is friendly and non-competitive, between members and other staff.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Six months to one year experience leading group exercise classes preferred.
- Group Fitness Instructor Certification from one or more of the following; AFAA, ACE, ACSM, NASM, NSCA, or other nationally recognized through NCCA, tested, and renewal required certification. If not certified, must become certified within 6 months of hire.
- Required to obtain upon hiring and maintain certifications for First Aid, CPR/AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens.
- Prefer knowledge of and previous experience with diverse populations (youth, seniors, physical disability, race, culture, and others). Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
- Must gain knowledge of Health Seekers, Listen First skills, and the Y Mission.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Requires lifting, bending, kneeling, prolonged standing and getting down and up from the ground.
- Ability to work with cleaning agents.
- Able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Observe and respond to members and participants within classes.
