Summary of Position

Provide technical support and production coordination to Dana School of Music & University Theatre and work with faculty and staff to maintain facilities and support classroom activities. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to, technical direction, production management, maintenance and operation of technical theatre shops and systems, music equipment moves, as well as physical plant oversight in consultation with Director.

Position Information

Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Maintains Scene Shop production calendar.

Oversees maintenance, safety, and cleanliness of performance and storage facilities.

Hires, trains, and supervises Scene Shop personnel, including those students working in the shop for practicum.

Supervises and assists student support staff and crews in technical theater.

Works with production team, especially set designer and other department theatre faculty and staff, in providing technical support for events in 400-seat proscenium theater, 200-seat arena theater, and other alternative performance spaces, including realization of all scenic designs for the University Theatre season.

Oversees and coordinates inventory; order supplies, equipment; manage and maintain consumable resources and supplies, including major purchases, and negotiate rental packages of scenery stock.

Acts as liaison with contract scenic and lighting designers.

Assists with coordination of equipment moves for performances and events.

Serves as liaison for outside companies and agencies.

Coordinates and implements non-departmental use of department spaces and develops contracts for non-University organizations in consultation with YSU legal counsel and the department chair/producer.

Oversees general maintenance and repair or coordinate an outside service for upkeep and repair as necessary, of tools, equipment and spaces pertaining to the Scene Shop and Wood Shop in Bliss Hall.
Maintains Wood Shop the hiring, scheduling, and supervision of student assistants to oversee open studio hours.

Provides Scene Shop and Wood Shop safety instructions and applicable health & safety training for students, faculty, and staff utilizing studio facilities, including student workers and assistants.

Other Functions and Responsibilities:
Attends meetings and participates on committees and workgroups as appropriate.

Works within a flexible schedule requiring forty-hours per week, typically Monday through Friday with occasional weekends.

Hours may vary in consideration of university class schedules, deliveries, building maintenance and other departmental needs.

Acts as liaison with the Office of Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Equipment Operated:
Computer and all other standard office equipment.

Work Schedule:
Typically, Monday through Friday. Occasional events on weekends and evenings.

Supervision Exercised:
Supervision is exercised over student employees.

Chairperson, Department of Theater and Dance

Qualifications and Competencies

Required Certifications, Training, and/or Licensures: Environmental Health and Safety, EPA, and OSHA regulations certification within three months of employment; valid driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of: Modern lighting and sound design; use and basic maintenance of shop tools University policies and procedures*; office practices and procedures; department/division goals and objectives*; department/division policies and procedures*; workplace safety practices and procedures*; English grammar and spelling; records management; office management; project management.

Skill in: Use of office equipment; typing, data entry; computer operation; use of computer software and other programs applicable to the assigned department/division*.

Ability to: Read and interpret architectural drawings; work independently and effectively with undergraduate crews; collaborates and communicates collegially with faculty and staff in support of University Theater program; ability to stay on task and meet deadlines; collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; determine material and equipment needs; compile and prepare reports; use proper research methods to gather data; understand a variety of written and/or verbal communications; maintain records according to established procedures; effectively interact with personnel and public to answer routine questions; train or instruct others; move quickly and effectively from one tasks to another; work independently and in a team environment; develop and maintain effective working relationships.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater Production. Five years of experience in theatre production and operation; or graduate degree in theatre production in lieu of five years of experience in theatre production.

Preferred Qualifications:
Supervision in educational theater setting; experience working in a scene and wood shop; basic welding, painting, and carpentry skills; experience coordinating production and performance schedules; knowledge of modern lighting and sound design; knowledge of use and basic maintenance of shop tools; and ability to read and interpret architectural drawings.
