Definition

This position involves the direct supervision of juvenile offenders, including admitting, detaining, controlling, restraining, monitoring, screening, and counseling them within the physical premises of the Youth Center of the High Plains. Ensures a safe and therapeutic environment for residents and staff by following established departmental policies and procedures. All training for certification as a JSO is provided in-house.

Salary: Full Time JSO’s: Starting pay $45,360.05 ($21.81 hourly); plus, a $3,000.00 state salary benefit, and a $1,500.00 stipend divided among 26 payroll cycles for a year

Randall County benefits offered to full time employees are optional health, dental, and vision plans, bereavement leave, longevity pay, holiday leave, vacation, sick leave, up to a 3% cost of living raise annually, up to a 1% performance increase annually, etc.

Part Time JSO’s: Starting pay is $16.00 an hour with an increase to $18.00 an hour after certification, with a $2.00 pay differential for nights and weekends and a $5.00 pay differential for select holidays. All training for certification is provided in house.

Education:

  • High school or GED required
  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, psychology, social work, education, or similar field preferred

Experience:

  • One year’s experience working with adolescents preferred

Qualifications:

  • At least 21 years of age
  • Must be able to qualify and remain qualified to drive county vehicles

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Closely monitor the behavior, attitudes, and relationships of residents.
  • Adhere to all approved policies and procedures to ensure safety of residents and staff.
  • Reduce the possibility and desirability of escape attempts.
  • Encourage maximum resident participation in Youth Center programs.
  • Administer consistent disciplinary actions to residents in accordance with Youth Center discipline management standards.
  • Develop and direct programs in academics, independent living and social skills, arts and crafts, group projects, recreation, group discussions, anger management, etc.
  • Provide competent and professional counseling and guidance to residents during groups, through personal contact, or through appropriate referrals.
  • Provide documentation of resident behaviors by making accurate chronological entries in caseworker.
  • Maintain order and discipline.

  • Consistently model appropriate behaviors of maturity, character, judgment, anger management, self-control, etc.
  • Effectively control hostile situations and persons
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Work independently and as a team player
  • Maintain strict confidentiality

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $22.24 per hour

Expected hours: 36 – 48 per week
