OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST

 

DEFINITION

 

Under the direction of the Speech/Adapted Physical Education Department Coordinator, provide occupational services including training in motor skills, oral motor ability, sensory motor integration and activities of daily living for identified children.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Assess students’ fine and gross motor abilities, oral motor skills orthopedic status, sensory processing status, movement, posture and tone as related to participation in educational programs.  Provide therapy oriented intervention in natural settings.  Consult and demonstrate with families, teachers and aides regarding therapy interventions.  Provide recommendations to other team members, which serve the students’ overall educational needs.  Write quarterly progress reports on therapy programs.  Review reports from health care providers requesting occupational therapy and coordinate occupational therapy services with students’ health care providers. Communicate results of evaluations and reports of occupational therapy services to the educational staff, parents and other professionals and agencies concerned with the students.   Act as a resource to school personnel in interpreting occupational therapy services.  Re-evaluate students’ individual occupational therapy plans on a regular basis.  Plan and develop therapeutic intervention goals that are educationally relevant and will be used in students’ education programs.  Establish a system of documentation that is professional, efficient and accountable and that conforms to state and individual agency policy.  Provide reports for use in Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) team, assist in developing IEPs, and attend IEP meetings as necessary and maintain progress notes on student records.  Facilitate in-service education and professional development for related service/occupational therapy staff.  Monitor the occupational therapy program goals by teaching other staff who are involved with the implementation of the intervention procedures.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education and Experience

Graduate of an accredited University program of Occupational Therapy, licensed by the California Board of Occupational Therapy and a minimum of one-year experience serving students with disabilities.

 

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of specific disabilities, skills and movement concepts related to various activities; IEP services policies and procedures; basic instructional methods and techniques; child development principles and practices related to children with special education needs; curriculum goals and objectives. 

 

 

Ability to provide occupational therapy services to students and maintain a safe and orderly treatment area.  Conduct assessments of students to determine need for occupational therapy.  Facilitate in-service training and participate in multi-disciplinary team assessment and reporting.  Provide consultation to the education system regarding student needs, professional needs and system needs in order for the system to achieve its goals and objectives.  Provide reassessments of students and communicate the needs of students focusing on areas of need at intervals determined to be educationally relevant.  Develop specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize and accomplish assigned work.  Ability to work as a team; have a positive attitude and good communication skills.  Ability to demonstrate character based performance.

 

Physical Ability

Requires sufficient arm, hand and finger dexterity in order to operate a personal computer keyboard, typewriter and other office equipment.  Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers.  Requires lifting of light to moderate objects (between 20 to 30 lbs.) on an occasional basis and sufficient ambulatory ability to stand for sustained periods of time.  Requires ambulatory ability to go to different locations.  Requires the ability to take precautions against a nominal exposure to health and safety risks.  Requires speaking and hearing to communicate in person or over the phone.

Valid California Occupational Therapist License and valid California driver's license. Graduate of an accredited university program of Occupational Therapy, licensed by the State of California and a minimum of one year experience serving students with disabilities.
