What are the responsibilities and job description for the Deployment Environmental Health, Data Integrity and Management, and Quality Assurance Internship position at Zintellect?

The Department of Defense (DoD) is offering a post-baccalaureate internship at the Defense Health Agency’s Defense Centers for Public Health – Aberdeen (DCPH-A) within the Environmental Health Risk Assessment Division (EHRAD).

What will I be doing?

If you are interested in the fields of public health, environmental health risk assessment, environmental data management, deployment health, and/or environmental exposure assessment and surveillance this fellowship will provide you an educational experience This opportunity is aimed at furthering your knowledge of health risk assessment and data collection, management, and quality assurance.

  • Learning about environmental surveillance and health risk assessment under challenging, austere conditions.
  • Learning about deployment health and gain experience in environmental data quality management.
  • Helping ensure health information to veterans and service members is correct and appropriate.
  • Contributing to solutions for difficult environmental health problems in complex environments.
  • Helping design and implement better environmental monitoring and surveillance processes in locations where service members are deployed.
  • Learning to analyze environmental health data, assess risk, and summarize health findings for deployed service members using a variety of systems and software.

Collaborating with teams to improve the standardization of, and utility of, DOD’s existing public health data systems that support deployment health

Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland

What is the anticipated start date?

The DCPH-A is ready to make appointments immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

What is the appointment length? 

Appointments are initially for one year with the option to extend the appointment for up to four additional years, contingent upon project needs and funding availability.

What are the appointment provisions? 

You will receive a stipend to be determined by DCPH-A. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other provisions may include the following:

  • Health Insurance Supplement (Participants are eligible to purchase health insurance through ORISE)
  • Relocation Allowance
  • Training and Travel Allowance

The Environmental Health Risk Assessment Division (EHRAD) within the Defense Center for Public Health (DCPH) is responsible for identifying and assessing legacy, current, and emerging environmental health threats, as well as developing and communicating solutions for those threats, in both deployment and CONUS locations within the DOD.  It also leads the effort to improve the quality and reliability of health risk assessment data, products and services that support Force Health Protection and the DoD public health enterprise.  The individual in this role will review, improve, assess and translate deployment environmental health data and information to support DoD and public health decision-makers. For more information about the DHA's DCHP-A, please visit Home - Defense Centers for Public Health - Aberdeen.

About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.  Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program.
