The ECMO Specialist performs continuous surveillance, assessment, and troubleshooting of the ECMO circuit and the patient's status. Provides respiratory care for patients receiving therapy using extra-corporeal membrane oxygenator (ECMO). Being an ECMO Specialist may assist the physician with special procedures. Assesses patient's response to therapy by performing diagnostic tests and procedures including arterial blood gas sampling, oxygen saturation, end-tidal carbon dioxide measurement, pulmonary mechanics, spirometry, and metabolic testing. Typically requires a bachelor's degree in respiratory therapy or equivalent. Requires certification as Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT), applicable state license, and CPR-BLS certification. May sometimes require Adult Critical Care Specialist (ACCS) certification. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department.
