The MES Automation engineer person would work with corporate teams to understand thier use cases,determine thier needs, then design and implement the Manufacturing Execution System that meets thier needs. This space requires more creativity and experience then a standard controls engineer because they need to be able to help customers identify workflow issues and recommend solutons.
