Description:
This person will work with the Electrical Technology team and support ongoing ALS operations as a technologist. Some of this work could be R&D for upgrades or sustaining existing systems. Might also be matrixed out to other projects. The electronics technician position provides advanced technical support of a variety of electronics systems. Test, evaluate, troubleshoot, repair and maintain complex electronic and electro-mechanical equipment and systems with the use of technological skills, scientific principles and mathematics. Fabrication/Install JD: Fabricate complex and highly specialized electronics apparatus that require advanced technical knowledge and expertise in manufacturing methods, tooling and equipment usage, circuit analysis, non-standard packaging and enclosures, and component and material selection. • Install large control, instrumentation and communication systems, which require thorough understanding and application of system integration principles. • In collaboration with engineers, designers, and electronics coordinators, design and develop complex printed prototype models for production which emphasize ease/cost of manufacturing, access for maintenance and calibration, and cost/technical performance optimization. • Design and fabricate specialized electronics packaging and enclosures, which require advanced expertise in metallic and non-metallic material forming techniques. • Perform Quality Assurance (QA) on any installation and fabrication tasks that are released from the Electronics Installation shop. Maintenance JD: Ability to work the ALS shift schedule; seven days on, four days off, seven days on three days off for each of three shifts. • Diagnose and correct equipment and system malfunctions that fail to respond to conventional corrective measures by independently applying a high degree of technical creativity, innovation, expertise and judgment. • Develop or evaluate test procedures, analyze circuit or system performance requirements, and develop effective diagnostics by applying advanced technological skills, scientific principles, and mathematical calculations. • Collaborate with engineering staff in the design, modification and development of commercial and experimental circuitry, systems or prototype models. • Advise and assist professional staff and contribute to the design of technical applications. • Utilize extensive knowledge of ALS high voltage and high current power supplies. • Utilize extensive knowledge of ALS high power RF systems. • Generate rough sketches, engineering drawings and develop special procedures for control and operation of research experiments and tests. • Write or interpret specifications used in designing, maintaining and calibrating electronic or computer components, equipment or systems. • Plan and organize support effort and material needed to complete a specific project or task.
