Job Title: Phlebotomist

Job Description

The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, and record maintenance data.
• Decontaminate and update patient information.
• Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
• Explain the process of venipuncture, blood drawing, and other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) in a clear and courteous manner.
• Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
• Fully understand all physicians' orders.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
• Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Package specimens for transport and store them according to the required temperature and protocol.
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
• Attend annual department training.
• Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Essential Skills

• Phlebotomy certification for the state where you will be employed.
• Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• 2-4 years of experience.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Able to float to multiple sites.
• Customer service skills.
• Experience with specimen processing.
• Experience with pediatric and geriatric patients.
• Knowledge of health care and patient information management.

Work Environment

The position requires working in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting. The role involves handling various types of specimens and using different equipment, including straight needles and butterfly needles. The work environment is regulated by OSHA and DEP standards, and annual training is provided. The dress code is professional attire appropriate for a healthcare setting.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $17.00 - $21.50
