Job Title: Research and Development Technician

Job Description

We are hiring for a Research and Development Technician in the Chicago, IL area. This is an excellent opportunity to work alongside expert scientists on innovative projects. The role involves supporting multiple R&D projects, maintaining lab organization, and handling various chemicals and equipment.

Responsibilities

• Work with senior scientists to support multiple projects concurrently.
• Weigh and mix powders, and load them into the furnace.
• Prepare slurries for testing.
• Maintain a clean lab space, including glassware, crucibles, and other equipment.
• Ensure proper lab organization with an effective naming and labeling system.
• Update reports into an electronic lab notebook.
• Operate small-scale R&D equipment, including hot plates, stir plates, tube furnaces, and pH meters.

Essential Skills

• Experience with fume hoods and glove boxes.
• Experience handling hazardous materials such as flammable, corrosive, toxic, and water-reactive substances.
• 2 years of experience working in a chemistry lab.
• Experience with sample preparation, including handling acids, bases, solvents, and slurries.
• Knowledge of compressed gases and gas cylinders.
• Proficiency with R&D equipment such as hot plates, stir plates, and tube furnaces.
• BS in Sciences.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with battery technology is a plus.
• Experience with compressed gases and safety protocols for powder materials.
• Strong orientation towards safety.
• Ability to follow instructions and solve problems.
• Keen observational skills to notice and report abnormal findings.

Work Environment

The role is based in the R&D lab, supporting senior scientists and multiple projects simultaneously. You will be involved in the preparation of powders under various conditions and slurries, working on samples of less than 1 kilogram. This is a dynamic environment with opportunities to research new chemicals and materials and potentially develop new procedures. The company is experiencing rapid growth, moving into new facilities, and expanding their commercialization and production lines.
