What are the responsibilities and job description for the Investigator position at Ada County?

Performs professional investigative services for the Ada County Prosecutor's Office; performs related duties as required. The position is located in the Ada County Prosecutor's Office.
 
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The incumbent works with prosecuting attorneys and law enforcement and is granted considerable latitude to exercise independent judgment. Completed work is reviewed from an overall standpoint in terms of feasibility, compatibility with other work, and effectiveness in meeting expected results.

This position is eligible for Police Officer membership/Rule of 80 under PERSI.
  • Conducts comprehensive reviews of police investigations, identifies problems and deficiencies;
  • Coordinates and/or conducts additional investigative activities by filling gaps identified in cases;
  • Examines crime scenes and physical evidence to gain information for the prosecution;
  • Takes photographs, as necessary;
  • Makes copies of media evidence for case preparation;
  • Conducts and documents interviews with witnesses and others;
  • Conducts review of audio and video files for the purpose of making redactions where appropriate;
  • Locates missing persons;
  • Identifies possible suspects using a working knowledge of criminal investigative procedures, and documents additional evidence;
  • Researches the background of persons relative to cases;
  • Testifies in court regarding investigative actions taken and pertinent results;
  • Serves as a liaison between the Prosecuting Attorney's Office and local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Performs related functions as required.
  • A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university or an equivalent combination of education and experience required;
  • Must have accreditation in or proven knowledge of basic police skills and be proficient with firearms and self-defense techniques;
  • Knowledge of personal computers and Microsoft Office applications;
  • Good knowledge of the principles, procedures, and practices of criminal investigation;
  • Good knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local laws;
  • Skill in interviewing witnesses, victims, and related parties;
  • Skill in gaining trust and confidence of others;
  • Skill in giving clear and convincing testimony in court;
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive written reports;
  • Ability to communicate with and relate to a wide variety of professionals, police officers, victims and witnesses;
  • Ability to document cases and present such to the Prosecuting Attorney's Office;
  • Ability to work effectively with situations that may be highly emotional in nature;
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • The incumbent is subject to a criminal records check and fingerprinting;
  • Must qualify at least twice annually with duty weapon;
  • Adherence to the Code of Ethics for legal profession is required;
  • This position has been designated safety sensitive and therefore the incumbent is subject to random drug testing.
  • The schedule is Mon-Fri, day shift and it is not subject to on-call;
  • The work is performed throughout the county and may involve an element of personal danger.
