What are the responsibilities and job description for the Reporter position at Adams Communications Co?

Capital city newspaper seeks two passionate journalists who want to learn

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle has two immediate openings for passionate journalists looking to improve their skills as part of our award-winning news team. Whether you’re a fresh college grad or a seasoned veteran reporter, our main objective is to make you a better journalist while you’re with us so you’re prepared for the next stage of your career.

Criminal justice reporter

The ideal candidate will have an interest in, and preferably some experience covering, law enforcement and court news, as well as a willingness to cover other types of stories and features. This person often serves as our second reporter during state legislative sessions. We’re looking to hire someone equally comfortable covering breaking news or sitting in the courtroom, covering an arraignment, trial or sentencing. (This person will replace a two-year journalist who is moving on to a new opportunity.)

Local government/business reporter

For this position, we’re looking for someone with an interest in covering local government and the capital city’s growing business community. The ideal candidate will have a drive to inform readers and hold government officials accountable, as well as an interest in covering other types of stories and features. (This is a position that went unfilled during the pandemic.)

With both positions, we are looking for competitive journalists with a drive to be first to tell stories online, along with telling long-term, larger-scale stories that include visual and digital components, as well as people-focused stories.

Located in the state capital of Cheyenne, the WTE and WyomingNews.com provide both spot and in-depth news coverage of the southeast part of the state, including the Wyoming State Legislature, Cheyenne Frontier Days and much more.

At the WTE, you will have the opportunity to work as part of a cohesive team, and learn from an experienced, supportive editor who has been in the community for nearly 25 years.

Essential skills and requirements:

· Bachelor’s degree or higher in communication or journalism.

· Comfortable writing quickly and consistently in AP style.

· Strong eye for details.

Desired skills and experience:

· Experience writing enterprise and long-form content, as well as telling personal stories.

· Experience covering news on social media platforms.

· Some experience with photography, video and/or design preferred, but not required.

These positions require a professional who is passionate about journalism and the impact it has on our local communities. If you feel like you’d be the right fit, send a resume, cover letter, writing samples and at least three references to Managing Editor Brian Martin at bmartin@wyomingnews.com. These positions will be filled quickly, so don’t delay!

Cheyenne is conveniently located 90 minutes north of Denver and 45 minutes east of Laramie, home of Wyoming’s only four-year university. We are less than two hours from Rocky Mountain National Park, and close to many other scenic outdoor areas, including great places to hike, fish, ski, camp and bike. If you’re looking for a small city with plenty of amenities that still maintains a small-town feel, this is the perfect place for you!

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle is a publication of Adams Publishing Group, an equal opportunity employer.
