JOB SUMMARY:.
Receives complaints from the public concerning crimes and emergencies, dispatches
appropriate law enforcement, medical or fire personnel and relays instructions or
questions from remote units to ensure public safety.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Answer incoming calls for the Sheriffs Office, Police Department, and Fire
Department on the regular phone system and all calls on the 9-1-1 system from
subjects reporting emergency and non- emergency situations.
  • Determine through questioning what a situation is, where it's located, and what
response is needed.
  • Contact outside agencies to advise of incidents in their jurisdiction when calls
terminate in Andrews, i.e. cellphone calls that get routed to Andrews PSAP.
  • Provide support to callers during emergency or traumatic events.
  • Provide pre-arrival emergency medical care instructions to callers as needed on
medical calls.
  • Dispatch the correct resources to emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Communicates with hearing impaired persons via a TDD (telecommunications device
for the deaf.)
  • Provide information to the general public during certain events.
  • Maintain contact with field resources to insure safety and fill request for various
additional resources during calls for service, i.e. additional officers, rescue units, key
carriers, etc.
  • Make inquires into local, state, and national law enforcement computer systems for
field units and other agencies for wanted/missing persons or stolen. property.
  • Make entries into state and national law enforcement computer systems for
wanted/missing persons or stolen property.
  • Update entries in local, state, and national law enforcement computer systems of
wanted/missing persons or stolen property.
  • Interacts with outside agencies in regards to information in local, state, and national
law enforcement computer systems.
  • Performs records management through use of CAD and county computer systems.
  • Interacts with members of the local Sheriffs' Office, Police Department, Fire
Department, and Department of Public Safety offices .
  • Interacts with outside agencies on matters of public safety.
  • Takes and forwards messages to members of local law enforcement agencies.
  • Monitors alarm systems for individuals and businesses and dispatches needed
resources for alarms at these locations.
  • Meets with the general public (various states of calmness) from walk-in traffic at the
lobby of the Sheriffs Office, determines their needs, and get the proper response for
them.
  • Miscellaneous other duties as assigned by supervisors.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • No experience requirement.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must complete six month in-house training program (first three months Call Taker
and last three months Radio).
  • Must complete the 40 hour Basic Telecommunicator Certification course as set out by
the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education
(TCLEOSE) within the first year.
  • Must complete the 16 hour TCIC/NCIC Full Access Operator Certification within the
first year.
  • Must complete the 24 hour TLETS/NLETS Operator Certification within the first two
years.
  • Must complete the 24 hour Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) Certification
within the first two years (including 8 hours additional CPR training).
  • Will be assigned to shifts under the supervision of a Dispatcher II or higher.
