Job Description

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office is seeking an Academic Success Advisor (Pre-Law). The Academic Success Advisor will serve as part of the Pre-Professional Advising Team in The Future’s Center, overseeing the day-to-day operations for Pre-Law Advising. This position will be the primary Pre-Law advisor for students across the University, creating a welcoming and informative environment that supports students as they consider, prepare for, apply to, and enter careers in law. The Academic Success Advisor will work collaboratively to expand current Pre-Law services and resources and support the Future’s Center mission by contributing to all career and pre-professional advising efforts. This position will also play a key role in advising and teaching students, including teaching multiple sections of a first-year success course.


The College provides services for students to explore their professional life after university in The Futures Center, a collaboration between The College and ASU Career Services.


This is an in-person position located on ASU’s Tempe Campus that may provide limited opportunities for remote work (up to 2 days a week).


Salary Range

$48,000 - $50,000 per year; DOE

Essential Duties

  • Under the direction of the Program Manager, provides personalized, intentional, and holistic advising support to students in their exploration of and preparation for a career in law.
  • Provide individual advising using knowledge of the application process and strategies that focus on identifying individual student strengths, guiding students to the best course of action for their individual pathway.
  • Teach multiple sections of a first-year student success courses.
  • Present group workshop and information sessions to discuss application prep, personal statement writing, and general information related to the professional school application process.
  • Coordinate and assist with events, including the annual Law School Fair.
  • Create and update educational materials on a range of pre-law and legal related topics, including web content and electronic resources.
  • Collect data and analyzes trends of ASU graduates pursuing professional school.
  • Contribute to the professional community of pre-law advisors at the regional and national level.
  • Develop and build relationships with stakeholders and admissions members at local law schools.
  • Other duties as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree AND one (1) year or more previous experience in one or more of the following: advising, student recruitment/retention or related student services utilizing a proactive and innovative approach which results in demonstrated outcomes in retention, graduation, and academic planning; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Master's or JD degree completed or in progress.
  • Ability to understand law school or professional graduate school admissions landscape.
  • Experience teaching coursework or leading workshops for students in an educational environment.
  • Experience demonstrating sensitivity to needs of a diverse student population.
  • Experience in knowledge of principles, practices, procedures and methods of evidence-based academic advising strategies.
  • Experience in applying the principles, techniques and methods of teamwork, compromise and collaboration to produce desired outcomes.
  • Experience using student information systems such as PeopleSoft, Salesforce, and DARS.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills.
  • Experience in interpreting student needs and determining when referral to other University resources is appropriate.
  • Experience in knowledge of academic programs, colleges, and departments university-wide.


Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated computer/technology peripherals.
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include resolving conflicts, coping with moderate stress levels, along with the requirements to complete tasks within set time constraints and frequently changing priorities.
  • Clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Requires some attendance at evening and weekend events.
