Excavation Assistant
Reports to Excavation Manager
SUMMARY: The Excavation Assistant is responsible for transporting aggregates and materials to and from job sites, providing assistance to the excavation managers and team.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Tracks daily work activities to submit for timesheets.
- Obeys traffic laws and follows established traffic and transportation procedures.
- Reads maps and follows written or verbal geographic directions.
- Plans or adjusts routes based on changing conditions, using computer equipment, GPS equipment, or other navigation devices, to minimize fuel consumption and carbon emissions.
- Checks vehicles to ensure that mechanical, safety, and emergency equipment is in good working order; and reports issues to the appropriate person.
- Follows appropriate safety procedures for transporting dangerous/hazardous goods.
- Educates themselves on weight restrictions and distribution and stays up to date on updates regarding DOT regulations.
- Loads and unloads machines onto truck trailers and drives trucks to transport machines and material to and from job sites.
- Inspects loads to ensure that cargo is secure.
- Ensures proper coupling and inspects all trailers.
- Performs vehicle pre and post inspections.
- Reports vehicle defects, accidents, traffic violations, or damage to the vehicles.
- Completes inspection logs.
- Maneuvers trucks into loading or unloading positions, following signals from loading crew and checking that vehicle and loading equipment are properly positioned.
- Stays aware of overhead conditions during dump operations.
- Fills truck with fuel when needed.
- Helps out with staging supplies, installing pipes, water lines, new sanitary lines, & storm lines when not actively transporting materials.
- Assists with soil compactions operations on occasion.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:

- Experience – willing to train the proper candidates
- Language Skills – Ability to read, analyze, and interpret road maps, navigation systems
and bill of ladings. Ability to respond to common inquiries from customers at delivery
sites. Ability to effectively present information to management, customers, and
dispatch. Ability to interact clearly and effectively, oral communication and written
communication, with customers and management.
- Other Qualifications – Valid Class A, or Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) is
preferred. 100% in-state travel required.

The work area is free of debris to prevent trip and slip hazards. All products and
equipment are stored in its proper location. All safety guards and other safety devices
are in its proper location, are functional, and utilized effectively on a consistent basis.
Standard operating procedures, safety work rules and good general manufacturing
practices are followed on a daily basis.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The individual needs to move about at sites, in and out of the truck, to load and unload the products; positioning themselves to move and stack products onto and off of trucks and the ground. The individual must be capable of positioning self to load and unload trucks by ascending and descending truck steps and lifting overhead to load; as well as inspect and maintain vehicles, supplies, and equipment. They must be able to exchange accurate information with other employees, vendors, and customers throughout the day. Must be able to detect road hazards from short and long distances to determine what action needs to be taken.
While performing the excavation duties of this job, the individual is constantly moving about at the job site moving, building, and tearing down objects. They frequently move about and position themselves inside tight and cramped space. This person must be acutely aware of their surroundings for safety purposes. The individual must be capable of reviewing their work for errors and make adjustments as necessary.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The individual will be exposed to various different environments from indoors to outdoors depending on the job site. Individuals will be exposed to warm and cold temperatures based on season. The individual will be exposed to loud machinery or equipment; moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. This individual frequently operates a vehicle to travel to and from customer locations and is exposed to vibrations.
Due to the risk of overhead hazards while installing or servicing utilities, additional personal protective equipment and procedures may need to be followed as situations dictate on various job and excavation sites. During warmer months, the required personal protective equipment may cause the employee to be very warm while working.
