Overview

Our long-term client relationship with Boeing Corporation has led to a need for a Command & Data Handling Engineer (Software/Electrical) on the Boeing Engineering and Technical Services (BETS-SWS) contract located in Houston, Texas.

 

BETS-SWS provides support to Boeing’s Houston-based International Space Station (ISS), CST-100, and other site programs under the suite of Boeing Engineering & Technical Services Support (BETS) contracts.  The BETS III team designs, develops, tests and certifies avionic and simulation software and hardware; and maintains flight-equivalent labs for development, simulation and test of flight and ground software.

Responsibilities

The Command & Data Handling Engineer (Software/Electrical) will:

  • Work as a member of the International Space Station (ISS) team with focus on the Command and Data Handling (C&DH) system.
  • Support requirement verification and validation for interface of new ISS Payloads (science experiments) to the C&DH Subsystem on-orbit.
  • Assist with traceability and test analysis, writing test plans, conducting testing, performing analysis, and documenting results.
  • Perform investigation, analysis, testing and troubleshooting of on-orbit hardware and software problems.
  • Assist the cognizant engineer in the technical oversight of the supplier technical teams and monitoring suppliers’ performance.
  • Assist in the preparation and/or review of supplier requirements, plans and schedules. Assist in the review and disposition of supplier contractual data.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience/Skills: 

  • BS/BA degree in computer science, engineering, science, math or related discipline from an accredited college or university or any equivalent combination of education/experience.

Preferences:

  • Familiar with hardware design and protocols of serial interfaces (such as MIL-STD-1553, RS-232, RS-422, and/or RS-485).
  • Familiar with Ethernet networks, architecture, and commonly used protocols (IP, TCP, UDP, etc.), as well as familiarity with both wired, IEEE 802.3, and wireless, IEEE 802.11 standards and protocols.
  • Design of microprocessor based embedded systems, analog to digital and digital to analog conversion is desirable.
  • Software development skills in C and Java programming languages.
  • FPGA/VHDL design experience, specifically with the Xilinx family of FPGAs.
  • Microsoft Access Database SQL development knowledge and/or experience.
  • International Space Station (ISS) experience.
  • NASA or DOD internship experience.

  • Work may involve sitting for extended periods.
  • May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lb.
  • Must have sufficient mobility to enter areas of test facilities where necessary.
  • Generally an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.
  • Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, fax, etc.)
  • Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical.
  • Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required.
  • Must be able to work in a team atmosphere.
  • Must put forward a professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation.
  • Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
  • This position may require some commuting and traveling to other installations as needed.
