JOB SUMMARY
Under direct supervision, the husbandry technician provides direct care and maintenance for various species of laboratory animals, including feeding, general husbandry and cleaning of caging and related equipment
DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work hours are from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM daily. Weekend and holiday work will be required.
- Responsible for general animal husbandry, including changing holding areas, cage change, daily cleaning and sanitizing of animal housing areas, toys, cages and manipulanda.
- Ensures that the animal care and environmental policies and procedures are always adhered to.
- Responsible for documenting in writing that animal husbandry tasks have been completed; report problems such as machine malfunctions and animal illness, orally and/or in writing, to supervisor or veterinary staff.
- Reports any abnormalities within the animal area.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RESPONSIBILITIES
- This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High School diploma or equivalent preferred
- Previous experience with nonhuman primates and/or other animals in a research setting is preferred but not required.
- SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP certification is highly desirable.
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions, communicates effectively with various departments and personnel within the facility.
- Ability to work independently and cooperatively with others of diverse personalities, education and cultural backgrounds.
- Ability to sit, stand, or move about constantly in the performance of work duties.
- Ability to work during extreme hot, cold, windy or rainy weather conditions.
- The ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- English preferred
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job, with or without reasonable accommodations. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, kneel and crouch. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must be able to undergo fit testing for a N95 respirator mask. The employee may be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Additionally, the employee must be able to distinguish colors.
