Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Sign Language Interpreter to facilitate effective communication between hearing and deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals. The ideal candidate will possess a strong command of American Sign Language (ASL) and have the ability to interpret spoken language into sign language and vice versa. This role is essential in ensuring that all parties can communicate clearly and effectively in various settings, including educational, medical, and community environments.
Duties
- Provide accurate interpretation between ASL and spoken English in diverse situations, including meetings, conferences, and one-on-one interactions.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism while interpreting sensitive information.
- Collaborate with clients to understand their specific communication needs and preferences.
- Stay updated on current trends and developments in sign language interpretation to enhance skills and knowledge.
- Assist in the translation of written materials into ASL when necessary.
- Foster an inclusive environment by promoting awareness of deaf culture and communication practices.
Qualifications
- Proficient in American Sign Language (ASL) with demonstrated interpretation skills.
- Multilingual abilities are a plus; proficiency in additional languages can enhance communication effectiveness.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal, with a keen understanding of linguistics.
- Previous experience in interpretation or translation is preferred but not mandatory.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, adapting to various environments and client needs.
