EDUCATION INTERPRETER (SEASONAL)

REPORTS TO: Full-time Education Staff
SEASONAL/NONSEASONAL: Seasonal, Non-benefited
FLSA STATUS: Hourly, Part-Time, Non-Exempt
POSITION SUMMARY:
To assist the zoo in accomplishing its mission running Day Camps, leading Overnights, interacting with zoo guests at animal exhibits, and assisting with other tasks and programs as needed.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Coursework leading toward a Bachelor’s degree in biology, zoology, education, childhood development, outdoor recreation, or related field is preferred
Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Previous work experience with children.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching overnight education programs to large groups of various ages.
Leading children ages 6-12 in day camp activities, including games, crafts, and nature walks.
Conducting informal interpretive interactions with zoo visitors.
Planning, organizing, and making independent decisions as necessary.
Working with, and giving direction to interns, volunteers and other interpreters.
Working independently handling small exotic animals.
Communicating using hand held radios.
Relate positively with diverse groups of people, including guests, staff, volunteers and vendors.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assisting with other programs as needed.
Complying with all Binder Park Zoo policies and procedures.
Participating in team oriented zoo projects as needed.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: N/A
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
Ability to work 18-20 hours overnight, sometimes sleeping on a hard surface.
Ability to read, speak, and write English in order to fulfill job functions in an understandable way.
Ability to sit, stand, bend, lift, and walk for up to 8 hours.
Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
