Job Description

Job Title: Family Engagement Learning Specialist
Department: Community and Family Services Division (CFS Division)
Reports To: BHSSC CFS Division Deputy Director
FLSA Status: Exempt

General Statement of Duties
The fundamental reason this classification exists is to provide technical assistance, training, and support to South Dakota’s SEA, LEAs, Tribal LEAs, BIA, Title I Schools, Schools in Improvement, and community-based organizations in the areas of parent, family and community engagement. The Family Engagement Learning Specialist works independently under the general direction of the CFS Deputy Director. A major responsibility of this position is to work within tribal communities, with diverse populations, and community organizations across South Dakota. This position requires the Family Engagement Learning Specialist to work independently, travel at least 50% of the year, and have a high degree of self-direction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Provide training and technical assistance to service providers to build capacity in providing families with evidence-based strategies for promoting literacy.
2. Assist with the dissemination of books, written material, and/or digital materials to parents and families.
3. Collaborate with community agencies. Develop and maintain positive working relationships with community agencies.
4. Work in collaboration with the CFS Deputy Director and Project Managers on program development.
5. Report to the CFS Deputy Director information pertinent to the operation of the CFS

Division.
6. Prepare and suggest recommendations on instructional materials, teaching and related activities for partners.
7. Train staff, families, and community on the program services.
8. Seek out opportunities to educate the public regarding the CFS Division. Be available to speak to service groups, businesses, or organizations when given those opportunities.
9. Compose, type, and maintain routine correspondence, reports, assessments, newsletters, and various other materials and projects. Submit reports and documents as deemed necessary.

10. Operate various equipment to include photocopier, telephone, fax machine, computer, calculator, and other technical equipment.

11. Maintain confidentiality at all times.
12. Attend meetings, training, and seminars as deemed appropriate and necessary by

BHSSC.

13. Perform duties in a manner consistent with safe practices and policies.
14. Perform other duties as deemed appropriate and necessary.

Minimum Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Be able to travel 50% of the time. This person will also have to be able to work independently and to have a high degree of self-direction. Education and Experience
1. Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field.
2. Four (4) years experience in K-12 education and (2) years in a supervisory capacity. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be acceptable by the hiring authority.

3. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
4. Ability to work well with students, subordinates, and public.

Language and Math Skills
1. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
2. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
3. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
4. Ability to perform basic math skills.

Reasoning Ability
1. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
2. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form.

Certificates, Licenses, Examinations
1. Successful competition in written and/or oral interviews.
2. Other such examination as deemed appropriate and necessary by BHSSC.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $55,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
