Brookgreen Gardens is searching for an experienced horticulturist to join our team!

Brookgreen Gardens is a national historic landmark in the heart of South Carolina’s lowcountry that exceptionally blends four mission areas in botanical gardens, art, history, and the environment.

Brookgreen is recognized as one of the great public gardens in America and the nation’s first sculpture garden, founded in 1931 by Archer Huntington and renowned sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington.

The Horticulturist position is responsible for achieving and maintaining a high level of horticultural quality in a designated garden area, thereby ensuring that all such plantings are developed and maintained at the highest levels of quality.

Examples of duties:

  • Maintains designated gardens to the highest level of quality by preparing plant beds, installing woody and herbaceous ornamentals, perennials, annuals, and bulbs; weeding, digging, propagating, transplanting and pruning; applying fertilizer and practicing IPM (Integrated Pest Management) as directed by the Vice President of Horticulture and Conservation.
  • Utilizes the latest techniques in, landscaping and gardening; fertilizers and pesticides; plant identification; equipment operation and service; and cultural practices of landscape plant materials.
  • Participates in the production and support of special events and other seasonal activities.

Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge of landscape gardening and maintenance practices. Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing. A two-year degree or equivalent experience in Horticulture or related field required. Computer skills and knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Power Point, and other programs is required. Applicant should be physically able to perform the duties required in maintaining a large garden and be able to work outdoors in all types of weather. Must have a valid South Carolina driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications: A four-year degree in Horticulture or related field.
