About This Opportunity
Brunswick County Public Utility is currently accepting applications for two (2) Utility Locators to join our Water Construction team. Brunswick County Public Utility provides water service to roughly 58,000 water retail customers, and wastewater services to roughly 28,000 sewer retail customers across a large service area. Our Public Utility team is committed to the community and takes a lot of pride in providing a high level of service to our customers every day.
The Utility Locator is responsible for performing specialized skilled work related to the Brunswick County utility system and related appurtenances. Work involves locating and marking existing County-owned underground infrastructure (primarily water lines and wastewater lines). Additional key responsibilities include work associated with repairing water lines and appurtenances, retrofitting existing lines with location marking appurtenances, operating water distribution and wastewater collection system valves, and gathering GPS data for use by GIS personnel. The position requires significant coordination with GIS personnel, water/wastewater employees, and the public. The Utility Locator reports to the Crew Supervisor or Division Superintendent.
Career Ladder
Brunswick County Public Utilities utilizes a career ladder program for advancement which allows employees to further their career in utility locating through promotion as advanced grades of water collections and/or water distribution certification are attained. Promotions include a 5% increase in pay when all criteria are met. Employees with appropriate certification may be required to serve as Operator in Responsible Charge (ORC) or Back-up ORC as necessary
In addition to the Career Ladder, Brunswick County provides other opportunities to assist employees in their career development, including extensive safety training and in-house CDL training (preparing staff for licensing the NC DMV).
Qualifications
High school diploma AND any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Experience in utility locating, water distribution, and/or wastewater collection system maintenance preferred. Willing to train entry-level candidates with transferable skill set (utility, construction, surveying, etc.).
- Valid NC or SC driver license required.
- Possession of Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A or ability to attain within probationary period.
- Grade C Water Distribution System Operator Certification or Grade II Water Pollution Control Collection System Operator Certification preferred.
Physical Requirements
Must be physically able to operate utility locating equipment and motor vehicle. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force and/or up to 50 pounds of force more frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Physical demand requirements are for Medium Work.
