Job Summary :

The Controller provides overall leadership of the Accounting department, overseeing accounting and regulatory compliance. This role emphasizes collaboration with internal teams across all departments to ensure accurate financial operations. The Controller will also ensure adherence to industry regulations and standards (including surplus lines tax compliance and alignment with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), maintaining the agency’s financial integrity in alignment with corporate goals and values.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Review and evaluate material contracts from both an accounting and operational perspective, providing financial insight and risk analysis to inform strategic decision-making and ensure contract terms are financially sound and aligned with company objectives.
  • Continuously collaborate with the Accounting team and other departments across the organization to analyze, refine, and document accounting procedures and processes for efficiency and accuracy
  • Serve as an administrator for key financial and agency management systems (Applied Epic, Comulate, and Fluence)
  • Prepare, review, and assess monthly financial statement results and package(s) by the 12th for CFO review before distribution to the Board of Directors
  • Generate ad hoc financial reports for executive management and internal stakeholders as needed
  • Participate in corporate internal audits with coordination from the internal audit team
  • Review and approve account reconciliations prepared by accounting staff, ensuring accuracy and completeness
  • Oversee the annual financial statement audits and coordinate with internal teams to facilitate a smooth audit process
  • Coordinate with the internal tax and external tax accountants by providing required information for quarterly and annual tax filings and payments
  • Oversee the preparation and timely filing of all state, local, and surplus lines tax returns, ensuring full compliance with applicable regulations and deadlines
  • Assist with the compilation and submission of quarterly and year-to-date financial reports for industry partners and benchmarking programs (e.g., MarshBerry, Reagan Consulting, Assurex Global, U.S. Census), ensuring accuracy and timely delivery
  • Participate in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activities by conducting financial due diligence on potential acquisition targets to assess their financial health, risks, and synergies. Post-acquisition, lead the integration of an acquired company’s financial operations, aligning accounting processes and systems and collaborating with senior leadership to ensure a seamless transition during the integration period.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and CPA designation is required
  • 10 years of progressive accounting/finance experience including managing staff
  • Experience in the insurance industry – especially across Property & Casualty, Employee Benefits, and Surety lines – is highly desirable
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to produce results both independently and through team collaboration
  • Excellent planning, organizational, and project management skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with a collaborative approach to working with internal stakeholders across all departments
  • Demonstrated commitment to upholding corporate culture and core values
  • High proficiency with financial and office software; experience with insurance industry systems such as Applied Epic, Comulate, and Fluence is a plus
