Description

The School Psychologist's primary role is to assess and interpret students of the school, pupils with disabilities in Kindergarten through Grade 12 , to reach their academic, social, emotional and physical potential.  S/He will review test results, consult with parents and certified and non-certified personnel, and generally observe students in their learning environments to diagnose learning disorders, mental disabilities, behavioral problems and work to resolve them either through direct assessment or therapy with the student(s) or indirect interventions when working with teachers and parents.


To best meet the learning requirements of each student,  the School Psychologist may plan, implement, and evaluate in-school programs, as well as recommend certain approaches to parents and teachers regarding behavioral problems of students. S/He also work directly with students and provide counseling and advice on how to better cope with classroom scenarios.





Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in a related field
  • NJ School Psychologist Standard Certification required
  • NJ Supervisor Certification required
  • Experience developing programs preferred
  • Successful professional experience with programs dealing with students with disabilities
  • Demonstrated aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities
  • Required criminal background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal alien status
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as The Calais School may find appropriate and acceptable 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide diagnostic services in the area of intelligence, personality, sensory motor, achievement, and adaptive behavior to students with suspected exceptional educational needs.
  • Provide alternative intervention strategies and/or assessments to students with non-exceptional educational needs.
  • Consult with parents of students, who have been formally evaluated, about educational interventions and/or management strategies that can be utilized at home and at school at assist the child to reach his/her full potential.
  • Report test data and observations for students who have been referred to assist the IEP team in identifying various disabilities along with helping to determine the need for special education.
  • Participate at IEP team meetings by serving as a member.  This responsibility may involve scheduling the meetings with the teachers, specialists and parents, facilitating the communication at the meetings, completing the mandated procedures and filing the final report.
  • Provide direct individual and group counseling services to students who are experiencing academic, social, emotional or behavioral adjustment problems.
  • Collaborate/consult with individual teachers regarding learning or behavioral concerns about students.  Assist the teacher in establishing behavioral management programs and/or classroom modifications to accommodate the learning needs of their students.
  • Teach individual parents or organize group presentations on specific strategies or techniques to assist the parent in the successful management of their child.
  • Serve as a consultant to the School Counseling and Resource Team to provide pre-referral intervention alternatives.
  • Coordinate School, Community, County, State & Federal resources & agencies to assist students with special needs.
  • Other responsibilities related to the position as assigned by the Assistant Director.
