Air Pollution and Climate Change Health Science Specialist

This position can be located in Sacramento or Riverside County.

This position is a 12-month Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.

If you have permanent status and have passed probation, you have mandatory reinstatement rights into your former position/classification at the end of this LT appointment. You will be separated from state service if you have not had prior permanent or probationary civil service status. During this 12-month limited-term assignment, you may be entitled to receive health, dental, and vision benefits. You will also earn State Service and accrue monthly leave credits.

Are you ready to be part of a team dedicated to protecting and improving health in vulnerable communities and the public? The Climate and Health Analysis and Library Services Section is seeking a candidate to collaborate with a team of skilled staff to investigate some of the most important issues affecting the health of residents in California. The section studies how exposure to ambient air pollution, climate change, and inequity impacts the health and welfare of California's vulnerable communities and sensitive populations, such as children and seniors. The section is involved in conducting and sponsoring critical research that provides information to help assist in California Air Resources Board's (CARB's) efforts to protect public health for both communities and residents, including the most impacted areas and population groups. The section also operates the California Environmental Protection Agency (CALEPA) Library (also known as the Science and Technical Library) and the (CALEPA) Law Library.

The successful candidate will serve as a subject matter expert for climate change and health including the co-benefits of (CARB's) policies and programs to reduce the impacts of climate change and increase health in California's communites. (CARB) programs to reduce climate change impacts, such as those that support increased urban greening and promotion of the health of California's natural and working lands, will result in community co-benefits such as improved physical and mental health outcomes and reduced wildfire impacts. The candidate will help to develop, direct, and possibly conduct quantitative and qualitative research on important health concerns in vulnerable communities including contracts funded by (CARB). The candidate will also be familiar with and will provide expertise on how to include consideration of the effects of societal factors, including decades of inequality and systemic racism and how these factors will affect vulnerable groups and communities. The results of this research will support (CARB's) mission to reduce the impacts of climate change on health and provide information to help increase the resilience of California's communities. The selected candidate will be well qualified to analyze and interpret the results from contract studies, in house research and other published studies. Effective communication of health research results to management, the general public, local air districts and the Board is an essential component of this position.

Working Conditions

This position may be eligible for hybrid in-office work and in-state telework. The amount of telework is at the agency's discretion and is based on the California Air Resource Boards' (CARB) current telework policy. While the (CARB) may support telework, some in-person attendance is also required.

The positions at the (CARB) may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria outlined in the (CalEPA) telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of hybrid telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position’s designated headquarters location at their own expense, as indicated on their duty statement.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $5,633.00 - $10,903.00 per month
